I have a carbon HT and although it's close to being a sin I have a Guizzo Carbon Handlebar fitted that has a slight rise, maybe only 20mm but still a rise, and an Oxygen Alu Flatbar.

Carbon bar has some red in it that matches my bike.

I also have a Alu flat bar, more boring looking but narrower and lighter.

Riser:

Pros: Good looks, vibration damping of carbon.

Cons: Weight but not heavy at 173g, Rise on a race bike, limited room for controls. Bit wide.

Flat:

Pros: Weight, more space for controls, narrower.

Cons: Looks bland, no viberation damping.

I have a KCNC Stem and considered selling both and matching the stem and bars...

I am unsure of what to do...

The amount of vibration damping that you'll get from the riser bar is negligible. If you want to save weight then the obvious answer is to use the flat bar and run your suspension slightly softer.

As far as looks go I prefer a flat bar.

I must adimit, I also prefer the flat bar, even though, like you say it looks a bit dull, comfort might be better that looks.

I you want to sell the KCNC stem, let me know which one it is and the cost, I might be interested.

Tarmac - how can there we less space for controls on a wider rise bar than a narrow flat bar? Does the bend of the riser get in the way?

I have wide shoulders, so I don't love narrow bars that much. My previous risers were too high, so I flipped the stem and removed the spacers - putting me in the same position as flat bars, but it looked funny.

I also like riser bars for thier shape (sweep).

So, apart from aesthetics, look at function. Consider your riding position and ergonics while you also get the looks right.

Okay, lets starts. You NEVER put riser bars on a HT unless it's an all-mountain hardtail. And seeing that is a HT you will proberbly want to ad bar ends to that aswell wich is also a big no-no.

Splat - Strangely there is less room as the bend gets in the way, and the taper up to the oversize stem mount stops me from moving my shifters any further in.

Hog- I sit with my hands on my brake resevoirs while climbing, now with the flat bar I can put my hands on the empty space on the bars.

I got the flat bar anodised red, it's a dusty red and matches the decals on my schwinn. Now it's not so boring, and feels good with my controls in the right place.

Mampara - I will never fit bar ends, tried them once, nice position but looks horrible!

It's a racing HT now thru and thru

Bar - Easton EC70

Stem - Easton EA90

Both have got some red in them, both super light and super strong, and more than enough vibration dampening.

Problem solved!

Why is bar end a big no no?

Only on risers it's a no-no. Like I said, riser or low-risers are for AM/freeride/downhill and you never put bar-ends on those kind of bikes.

I used to race and only used a flat carbon bar because society and the scales said so. Then i tried a Fleegle Pro bar from Kiwi 2 months ago (under duress), a 15 degree curving monster, on my single speed, and now sadly, i had to buy another as i cant ride a MTB without it any more! Strange looks but oh so cool and comfy, and with it set up to come back at you, not flat, it is awesome! Worth a look, works for me, maybe for you!??!

With tears in my eyes, I will ask again, why can't you just use a bar/bar-end combination that works for you, makes you feel comfortable?

They would match my EC90 Seatpost well, I would have bought the ones on here a little while back but they were not oversize...

You just don't, it's one of those thing. It's against the laws of the universe. You can do it but you will be laughed at.

Strangley my wrists got more sore using the riser, I think the backsweep just didn't aggree with my wrists.

I used it more for the Carbon component and it looked good. Just never felt perfect.

Silly, stuck-up, pretentious mountain bikers. At least roadies don't worry about all this kind of cr@p.
