OK, I'm one of those guys that uses the internet as a reference to just about everything, especially when I want to tinker with something.

So last night, thinking about slowbee's post from a few weeks back about how to DIY derailleurs, I did some study avoidance and checked out the Park Tool site. Must rate it as one of the best DIY sites I have come across. Easy to find the info you want.

So I checked out the section about front derailleurs as I struggle to shift mine at times. Read the rather easy guide on how to do and this morning I gave it a go - 3 minutes later all seemed well.

Cycled to work and never had an issue, even screwed around with my gearing to make sure all was working 100%. Best they have worked in months - problem was due a lot to cable stretch as my bike has only done 650km and has yet to go for its service.

Not sure about gear/brake cables, but what happens on a guitar is not that the strings stretch, but that they wind tighter wherever the string bends. That's why the guitar goes out of tune quickly with new strings.

Change gears... :)

I recently replaced my cables and housings and it made a massive difference. Dirt goes into the housings and makes it harder for the cable to move around in them. The more dirt there is the more difficult changing of gears become.

Bit OT but, yeah, I check the net for everything too. When I needed to wire a trailer plug on to my bike rack, I had my notebook PC on the garage floor with a wiring diagram as reference. Once I was finished, asked my g/f to move the car into the garage so I could check if I got it right. She drove right over my notebook.

But the wiring was accurate.

Notebook still works 100% too...still has a tyre mark on the screen...

The Cable Housing ends along the route also seat more firmly into the stops and housing into the cable ends...so the whole system compresses a little.

Inner wire is "prestreched" to eliminate the secondary winding as decribed with Guitar strings.

I'm working on a tech Wiki at the moment... its going t be off the charts as a reference point for everything from suspension setup to tire pressure and derailleur setting! DECEMBER....

Great. I like the idea of local WIKIS as it addresses local issues and challenges.
