I service my bike myself but I would like to know what bike shops charge for servicing and what they include for their money?

Wash and lube?

Basic service? Does that include derailer cables?

Major overhaul, incl bearing service/replacement (Headset and BB) regrease seatpost servicing(if carbon) Brake alignment/pads Drivetrain replacement (if nec) obv parts not included in the service costs?

What are the options?

Check Over - This entails a wash and lube, assessment of the hubs, headset and

bottom bracket. We change the cables and brake pads, if need be. R 380.00

Full Service - This is a COMPLETE strip and rebuild of the bicycle. Every component

comes off the bike and we clean and assess the bike for any damage.

HT - R 550.00

FS - R 750.00

Road - R 550.00

Labour Only

well that all depends on where you go.

My last service entailed getting a half a tube of grease squeezed into the BB void, no wash and no chain lube. R350. That is why it was my 'last' service at a bike shop.

Did a mech course with JB at yellowsaddle, and took all the mystery away. Now its great understanding how the machine I ride works, and how to take care of ALL the issues it may present.

aparently Mike's Bikes is one of the few places that really strips a bike down to do a 'proper' service - hence the high cost for the 'extra' effort.

We quote slightly less but the principle is the same..... I am sad to hear that there bikeshops out there that do not carry out high standard of work. It puts the rest of us in a bad light.

Complete strip and rebuild for full service..... Its only right..

Personally I don't think it's that expensive. I service my own bike but let's take a major service - to take a whole bike apart, clean everything and re-assemble is more than one hour's work. If you can do this in an hour it means R350/hour. You won't buy anything for R350/hour.

Thats expensive I paid R300 for my FOX RP2 I can understand R450 to R500 for Fork though

I need to find out what the cycle shops in EL charge for services etc. i need a bike build done sometime soon and I actually dont know who would be the best to get that done.

Look, no offence meant here to ANY cycle shop BUT:

I service my own bike beacause I can not trust the "workmanship" of someone else. I don't feel that they (LBS) take the same quality care with my bike as I do.

How can I ever be sure they didn't stuff something up and tried to hide it? How do I know that all bearings have indeed been checked? Would they use the same quality grease as I do? And how do I know that the grease they show me is actually the same as what was put in?

As you can see, I have trust issues when it comes to the service of my machine!
