this topic is as old as the mountains, I know, but still I want to mention my experience.....

I upgraded my shifters and RD through LBSs on wednesday, costs were as follows:

SRAM x.0 grip shifters:  R730

SRAM x.0 rear derailleur:  R1550

Total                              R2280

I reckon that is cheap?  Especially if you take into account that this include fittment and fine tuning (something in which I suck), and that it is done in one day.....

Last year when I bought my XT shifters and rear derailleur. It landed here for less then the shifters alone. I just ordered wheels with XT hubs, black DB DTswiss spokes and Mavic 717 rims for less the R2000. Will see what the tax will be when it lands.

Thumbs up for my LBS, I've been battling to get my front derailer shifting correctly so i  took it to the LBS on Tues morn to look at and do a minor service while they at it, when i got it back it tues afternoon i took it for a spin and found under certain conditions the chain would drop between the 2 blades so i took it back, wed the LBS told me they escalated the problem to shimano, Thurs i went to fetch the bike and they had replaced the FAS blades as recommended by Shimano with another set of FAS blades (albeit 2nd hand ones), cost for blades NIL only paid for minor service and apology for my hassles.

Oh my word, you made me look. They have them in colour now and only 139 GBP. Their 08 version is 126 and 07 version is 76 so I do not know where you get 145 from.

Please name the LBS in question. If its Chris Willemse then they are an exception because they import the goods themselves.

I will buy from Chris before i buy from CRC, but Chris has a limited range of stock and doesn't always have what i want.

go figure...

Add tax, postage and no aftersales service......???? (Or more postage if you need to get it sent back to them)

I have a LBS, and I'm the 1st to admit that prior to opening a shop, I also ordered plenty stuff on line, but only stuff that are "consumables", i.e. tyres, tubes, chains, chainrings etc. All stuff that I was able to fit myself and not walk into the LBS and ask them to fit it for me.

Nothing that might need to be replaced / fixed under warrantee.

E.g. Ordered a set of road pedals from the UK, after 2nd ride, a piece of the carbon chipped off. would have cost me more to send back and get a replacement pair than the money I saved had I purchased locally.

What also happens, is customers walks in, asks your advice on items, and them buys from somewhere else. Maybe I should start charging by the hour for giving advice...LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL.

My take on this;

If its something that you are not worried about after sales service / warrantee, shop where ever you get the best price.

If its something where you require good after sales backup, support your LBS.

HAHAHA Free!

LBS = Local Bike Shop.

With import you will definitely pay VAT and sometimes a import duty charge although that has been a bit inconsistant in my experiences.

I prefer the lbs. They give me coffee, conversation and they've got a hot chick working there. And if Ive got a problem with something I bought they sort it out.

100% true WW. But some stuff here in SA has such shocking aftersales service that you would rather send it back then buy it here and strugle with the suppliers. And alot of stuff is just not available in SA even if the brand is represented here.

I just ordered a frame from CRC and at 105GBP (52% discount) I don't care if it breaks in 6 months. Insurance will cover that.

You're quite right with the aftersales service from certain distributors.

I wont mention names, but suffice to say there are certain brands I wont stock or recommend to customers and others where I'll tell the customer to rather buy brand A instead of brand B, because I know the distributor will back me up with great aftersales servcie, and thereby I'll be able to give the customer the same.
