So you're complaining because the traffic police did their jobs?

Not at all, but why don't they do there job of "MAKING OUR ROADS SAFER"

Exactly!! i.e. ensuring dangerous pot holes are repaired, directing traffic during power failures, removing retards from the road etc etc. Delgado2009-07-13 02:30:21

For all the chops that do get caught, maybe the 'fine' was also illegal. a camera directly after a speed indicator board is not legal, check all fines before you pay.

I got a R500 fine for it and I would like to moan! I thought the laws were for the safety of our roads' date=' but it appears as if they are?just there?for the sake of making money... Sitting with my cruise control on at the speed limit and some chop pulls out of a dirt road and chases me down (considerably more dangerous than my obscured number plate!) and wastes 15 minutes of my life writing out the fine...[/quote']

Yippeee, we agree...Sorry you got caught...but at least we agree

Did you know it was illegal to obscure your number plate?

Did you know your bike/s were obscuring your number plate?

I agree that it's petty policing, but it's really not much effort and/or cost to just comply with the law in the first place. Don't give them the opportunity to fine you - simple..

I honestly didn't know it was illegal and it was actually on the way back from knysna 3 weeks ago so before the warning from WW unfortunately... I have never seen a bike rack with a number plate behind it either and looked out for them on my way to knysna this weekend and only saw 1 (I would think cardboard with kokie writing is illegal too). Maybe there should be a warning on bike racks when you purchase them or something to let ppl know (or maybe I just missed all the warnings). Speed limits are clearly visible, but I don't remember my drivers test including the fact that bicycles that partially obscure number plates are illegal.

It appears you were unlucky then.

I got pulled over near Mossel bay a few years ago (after passing a traffic cop who was cruising in the yellow line) because my bikes were obscuring the number plate. He gave me a warning & suggested that I make a plan when I got home. One trip to the local number plate shop & R60 later I was sorted. No stress, no fuss & now no excuse for some lazy cop to pull me over.

most good bike racks have space for plate. My one LBS have a clear sign against the wall stating this. I had a plate that I attached with hook and loop tape (Velcro? is a registerd trademark) to the top tube of my bike. Worked perfect and the omie cop in the one town to Capefontein even approved of it and he is not normally pleased with anything.

Lol, love it when the guys get finedThumbs%20Up, get pissed of when I have to stick to the speed limit and all the guys (and gals) comes speeding past knowing well that the cameras cant pick their number plates up because their obscured.

And please nobody can moan that they did not know that its illegal to obscure your number plate, its the same as driving without one.

Maybe you could take a picture of how you've done this and post it on the hub. Think it of your "community project" for the month.

I just cable tied a square number plate to the bottom section of my bike rack (Holdfast hanging bike type). It sits below the bikes & therefore visible.

I've heard of other people hanging the number plate using some bungy cord which they just hook onto the bike.

But the priciple is that it is still illegal. Yes I too get frustrated by the chops that speed and get away with it when I get caught' date=' but if I was speeding, I was speeding and deserve the fine...[/quote']

I agree.... and

Speeding is unsafe and Speed KILL.....your non-visible nunmber plate does not kill

Why dont the cops spend more time cathing the speedster then?

They can't find them, their number plates were obscured... smiley36.gif smiley36.gif smiley2.gif

The issue is that you need to have a hanging type. I have a ride-on Thule which has space for a number plate - unfortunately not being portable, I could put it behind any car, so the plate holder that is provided is useless, as then the numberplate would be the wrong car, so you have to have a flexible working arrangement. I wonder if the cops would pick up that the two plates did not match?

there is also a NASTY camera in the pass between George and Knysna.  THe speed is 60km/hr on a downhill and just behind the sign there is the camera.

Its awesome if you get this camera to go off. . flashed me twice while I was on my bike. .  no numberplate though Big%20smile

WE HEARD ABOUT PEOPLE BEING FINED ON THE RADIO SO WENT TO GET MYSELF A NUMBERPLATE

I THINK THE ORGANISERS OF THE KNYSNA CYCLE TOUR SHOULD SEND OUT A REMINDER FOR PEOPLE TO PUT A NUMBER PLATE ON THEIR RACK BECAUSE THEY WILL BE TARGETED.

IF YOU GET FINED AFTER THAT THEN YOU CANT COMPLAIN.

ANYWAY THAT IS THE LEAST THEY CAN DO FOR THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THEY CHARGED.

While they are at it they can warn people not to commit any murders, set fire to a houseboat, shoot the streets lights out........oh and incest is pretty much frowned on in Knysna as well.

So thats where everybody was the weekend. Besides the cops, how was

Knysna?

Hijack off

The law is the law and there is no excuse not to comply. The cops started this

thing with the Argus a couple of years ago and it can not be something new. The

statements about the velcro and bungee cords come from fellas I believe were

caught or knew someone who were. BUT, obscuring your rear indicators, brake

lights and reflectors also is a non conformance to the law and if I remember

correctly no form of writing or graphic is allowed within 6 inches from the number

plate. It?s a distraction to the cops trying to take your number down! This was

a couple of years ago but like most of the law it might still be in effect

simply because the powers that be is too lazy or busy striking to do their

jobs. The fines are stupid! The excuse about road safety is downright silly and

an indication of traffic police's inability to do something positive. They have

one track minds and they are too lazy to think. It is also incomprehensible why

the cops have a right to break the law in order to uphold the law! If the number

plate is obscured and it is illegal, then so is the dangerous driving AND

speeding to apprehend the offender! Now who is calling the kettle black? I can

rant on and on about the traffic police failing in their jobs on a daily rate,

but let?s just leave it at this. When you carry bikes on the back of your car,

have a number plate visible. A new plastic plate will cost you R120 and it is

less than the fine.
