Asked my LBS this question last week. Relpy I got was that Fox will need an oil change and clean about every 6 months, but provided this is done, the dust wipers should last a fair length of time. Rock Shox needs less frequent service, but will most likely need new seals/wipers at every service. So in the log run, although needing more frequent attention, the Fox works out cheaper.

How true this will turn out to be I have no idea, but I now have a Fox fork on the bike.

Fanie, Chat met Johan B.

I was at his fork workshop and his knowledge is excellent! You can actually "save" the dust wipers after taking them off (on any shock....not just the one or the other) and re-use them if there is nothing wrong with them. This is the type of info you need...with a agent service they will most likely throw away a perfectly good dust wiper and oil seal and charge you for a new set (R350 - 450).

Good luck.

Biggest fox service i've had was R550, new low bushes, dust seals, oil etc.

Not sure on Rock, but they are probably cheaper.....the fox is oh so smooth, so worth the service cost every 6-8 months.

I think both are on a par as far as service costs go.

Rather look at which better suites your requirements and how much you are willing to spend. The Fox F100 basic service is a cake walk to DIY. Just not sure how easy the equivalent Rockshox are to service. I will need to re-attend JB's workshop now that I am on a Rockshox SID and only then will know.

It is not possible to say this or that fork is more expensive to service than the other.  The Rox and Fox both have similar wiper seals that cost approx the same. The Fox uses a bit more oil in the one leg and uses a proprietary air seal on the primary air piston whereas the Rox uses a standard O-ring.

Nevertheless, an honest mechanic should charge for time and materials and either one of the two forks could require more or less time than normal. For instance, the other day I had to fiddle with someone's Rox motion control damper for an hour and a bit to get it to work smoothly. This is unusual, but happens. Similarly, a Fox form has some fiddly ball bearings and grub screws that hold the blue and red damper adjustment knobs and could in themselves cost 30 minutes if they're rusted or stuck or whatever.

Trolley for trolley, I think both forks will cost the same in the long run, but the Rox is perhaps a bit cheaper if the same basket of parts are required each time.

I wouldn't make my decision based on this. I'd go for whichever available colour goes with my shoes.

Yep Johan shoe and fork matching is oh so important and don't forget the calf-length socks LOL

Though I must say the blue sid wc will look sweet with the blue nipples you got for my wheels...

Using the same thread' date=' how often should a front shock ie Fox Vanilla be servieced and can it be done by Joe Soap?[/quote']

Has seen plenty debate in the past, can hit the search option and get the full debate. Most manufacturers recommend every ~50hrs. Then some say it depends on the conditions you ride in. I say it also depends on how many times you high pressure hose your bike and get to busy around the seals.

My Fox when I serviced it had ~90hrs on it and all still looked good. I ride a mix of terrain, for the most part dusty, I also wash my bike a lot. So I say 100hrs between oil change (basic service). Perhaps a little longer, either way this figure I have mentioned will create plenty debate. Some say every 10hrs, but with the Fox your crush washers can only be re-used so many times (1-x times, really luck of the draw) before they leak, the only way to get new crush washers is to buy the entire seal kit at ~R350.00.

Basic service is very home mechanic friendly, instructions can be downloaded from Fox.

I am working on that crush washer issue. Enduroseals in the US refused to sell me only crush washers, even if I purchased thousands. Bastards.

So, I went to an injection moulding company and made a plan...at huge expense. However, I'll soon have millions of crush washers to sell. After about 2 million, I'll break even with the cost of the die.

Screw anyone who doesn't want to sell DIYers bits and pieces.

Fox AND Rox owners. The only bit of sanity in what I did is that both these forks use the same crush washers.

But JB, Moorewoodkid is gonna be the agent for Endura. Could he not help?

Good on you on your efforts. We all appreciate it. I still say you need to start up your own line of tools and consumables under the Yellow Saddle brand.
