I'm looking to buy a new HRM/Computer and have been looking quite a bit into the Garmin Edge 305. I'm not really familiar with Polar products.

Does Polar make something comparable to the Garmin Edge 305?

I can get the Garmin Edge 305 + cadence kit for R2895-00.

Some have suggested Polar S720X?

Local shops with good Polar prices?

Any suggestions? Experiences? Problems?

Thank you

JG

for cycling take a gps.  less sensors, less wires and you get to make cool maps and graphs.  For running a polar is smallar and easier.

the only downside with garmin is the miserable battery life.  7 hrs max.

Polar it does what you need and the battery like is forever. Why do you need something to tell you where to go if you know the route you going anyway?

Its not like you go out the door all kitted up and say "I have no idea where Im riding today"

As a mtbker I resent that statement,  I often "go out the door all kitted up and say "I have no idea where Im riding today""

The edge is ok if u want to make ur own tracks etc and plan a ride before you go. But if u just want the heart rate then go polar.

I use a Polar CS400 (look at comobike.com, good prices). The only downside compared to the Edge is the Polar displays fewer fields at a time. One needs to cycle through them. GPS really isn't needed unless you like looking at yourself Wink. Personal choice I suppose, but the Edge battery life would drive me up the wall.

Go for the Garmin. The Edge 705 though is better if you have the extra cash. The only negative is you can't wear the Garmin 305 on your arm and look like a cyclist while not on the bike.

I have the Garmin Edge 705 after having the S725x .... nothing in it really except the Edge is more of a "gadget". It is nice having the GPS and tracking is great.  I would buy a Garmin again..

Dont be so sure about that. im visiting the USA dont know east form west, but with my Edge305 I plan my route and follow the map without getting lost. I found some nice routes on mapmyride.com

My edge is almost 2 weeks old and i already cant go without it.

I cant really see the point of the Garmin. Its mainly telling you speed and elevation during a ride which the Polar does anyway. With the polar you can wear it all the time and get the footpod if you are a runner/triathlete.

Battery life aside which on a 305 you can push to 11 hours if you use it only for navigation and swith off HR and cadence function i prefer the garmin but its down to preference. Best place to see pro's and cons is to google search polar vs garmin.

I had a polar S720i and bought the edge 305. Its a nice gadget but a bit beefy on the bike. I changed back to polar after a month. Get the garmin if you really going to use the map functions. Its fun but really, how many new routes are you going to ride now? Go for the polar - proven quality and all the functions you really need
