On Saturday I saw a commuter on a Colnago, stopped him and asked him if he wanted to sell it. He said its his brothers bike, who races it on weekends, and his brother would kill him if he sold it.

Was a Master, with the formed top tube, with 600 Tricolor in reasonable condition. I asked him to please take the lock and chain off the seat post, chipping the paint on the top tube....

I found this bike for a bargain. Ideally I was looking for a bike with downtube shifters and with any luck, some non-aero brake levers (aero would be ok too)

The bike is a 7 speed...

My question is, can I replace the shifters (and brake levers) without having to change the deraileurs?

Would it even be worth doing?

Any thoughts or advice would be great!

Thanks

Never done it myself, but I have seen a couple of bikes use friction shifters with indexed derailleurs with no issues.

Downtube friction shifters works with everything. And once you are used to them and they are adjusted right, they shift great.

Dear All,

I'm an absolute bike and cycling history nut, and want to get more into classic / retro steel bike restorations. Been doing a lot of reading and research, but need some more info on a specific bike I can now purchase, as I found very little info available on the net and within various forums.

The bike is a late 70s, early 80s Armstrong by Raleigh SA, with the head tube badge stating "Armstrong, Springs, South Africa"

Has a Milremo Stem, handlebar and hubs, Weinman Type 730 brake set, Simplex front derailleur (rear derailleur and coterless rank set not original), Brooks saddle, Shimano Altus downtube shifters, some French make pedals.

On the top tube it states GT, with paint and decals being original - photos attached.

The seller wants R3000, and I would like to know whether this is something worth purchasing and restoring, and whether it holds any historic / classic value, or whether it's only a mass produced version of a Raleigh.

Any info and help much appreciated...

The tour is going through our village this year on stage 11 Wednesday 13 July. Our house is available for rent, book it on the following links where you can see pictures of the house and village surrounds. The main road to view the race is a short walk from the house. There is space for 6 persons. The best way of getting there is Air France to Paris, connecting flight to Toulouse, 80km by rented car from there on.

Picked up this beauty yesterday :D

Its exactly the bike I was looking for! A Le Turbo Grand Prix like my dad used to have.

Big thanks to Racer!!!!

Can't wait to start restoring her

Nice bike GT

But I don't think you should repaint her. See if you can get a local paint shop, panel beater, to match the paint and patch her up.

Always much nicer to have the original patina, just makes her look so cool.

What do the other retro dudes think???????

Anyone interested in a set of BORAs (tubbies)?

Bought these about a year ago, but have decided I'm never going to use them. I paid R5000 for them (with 2 Campy wheelbags and 10 spd Record cassette) and new skewers about R600 = R5600

Anyone interested at that price, before I advertise them?
