Hey Mr Brunsdon

Good to hear from you again. My bottle of rose was hammered the same night i got homeSmile. Must say that was the one prize i enjoyed the most.

Seriously though. I have some meddals that i have used for target practise with the point 22 at home in magaliesburg. I used to be a runner before i turned to the dark side called cycling. Now all those 5 & 10km running meddalls i got years back have been usefull for target practise on the farm(no jokes).

Me and my brother use to hang em in a tree and take pot shots at them.Big%20smile.

However my Iron man and 2 oceans medals are valuable to me!

a  girl in my office did the 40k dome2dome ride on sunday. she looked at the medal and mentioned that it was her first medal since pre-school.

so right now i'll vote for medals even if i dont know what to do with mine ... because to someone else it may mean a lot.

My first medal was a 10k run. I trained for 5 months and it was like doing my firs 2wo oceans or iron man. That medal is sentimental to me just like your freinds 40k.

Now however i have a checkers bag full of medals. Running events almost always have medals.

I did a race  twice a month for 3 years. Add up all the medals and you soon realise they are great for target practise.

This topic sound like the repetetive boring topics in Buycycling Magazine. Why dont we rather discuss which is the best, Shimano or Kempekkernoglia, Polar or Garmin, Toyota or BMW ...... choose any one.

To novices and newcomers to the sport the medal is of huge importance and is a reward for what they have done. My collegue has her three medals stuck on the wall behind her desk and is hugely proud of them. We will see what happens when she get a checker bag full but right now those three medals are a huge motivating factor to enter another race.

interesting that you shoot at the medals that are no longer important, but keep the ones that are. Maybe once the first ones you got meant something - but you being a bit more experienced, they loose value.

For someone like me who is starting out - every medal is important as it is another achievement for me. They all have a story to tell. When friends come over and their kids look at the medals and they play with them,  wearing them, pretending to be champions -  its worth every R20 that I paid as part of my entry fee.

As an aside, two of my most prized medals, include my first mtb race medal from k2c and also the little cheapy thing that says I did the argus mtb race and road race in the same year.

No, keep the medals at races. Perhaps like the t-shirts, you should have a choice of getting one or not.

And maybe like Free has done, you could give them to someone who has never been given anything before. (what movie is that from ?)

Medals are not that expensive and for the WEST COAST EXPRESS the cloth badges used to cost us +- R 4.00 ea and the medals for 2008 came in at R 6.00 ea. This is huge branding for our sponsor.
