The three postings above is exactly what I expected. Cyclists deserve the sh*t name they have as well as sh*t that comes their way when motorists retaliate!!!!!!!

Big H for once we are in 100% agreement!!

I drove to teak place Saturday morning for mountain biking,

but also kept my eyes open for some safe tar suitable for first-time 94.7

riders.

10/10 to Teak place for mountain biking.

0/10 for road cycling.

It is a dangerous piece of road.

Motorists are way too tense.

Rushing to where ever to save 5 - 10 minutes. Arriving there all agro cause

some ladies and dudes were having a good ride on their bikes' date=' and Adding to the

profits of some coffie shop along the way.

[/quote']

The thing is, there are many many cyclists on that road. many. LOTS. you've

just managed to pass 2 cyclists safely, then there's another 2, and then 4. I

haven't counted how many. some of them have no-where else to ride, there are road

works and often there's no shoulder. There was a big bunch of about 30, could

have been more. re-organising as I reached them, 1 oke sitting up on his bike,

holding onto his buddy?s shoulder while he counts everyone. all over the road

and over the white line. I was sitting behind them for maybe 10 minutes, with

them knowing that I?m there, and not moving anywhere. if I hooted, I would have

gotten abuse. I was early for the teak place ride, so it wasn't necessary to

get the blood pressure up.

I?ve seen 2 trucks on that road that morning. on a road with cyclists and no

shoulder.

it's a dangerous place at the moment.

One other question - how many people drive with a camera at

the ready? Was the car driver specifically out looking for something to bitch

about?

Saturday morning there was lots to moan about. I haven't been out there for a

long while' date=' so I don't know if this is a regular occurrence. it's dangerous and

I can imagine that a fed-up driver might take a camera with. it's far better

than taking the cyclists out.

If the motorist is not trying to pass then he understands the

law and that is the roads are for other road users also including cyclist and

thus been on a public road he can expect held up! Be it bikes, slow driver,

trucks etc - so where lies the problem, unless this motorist is just trying to

be difficult and inconsiderate to other road users who has the same right as

this motorist. Yes a cyclist may ride in the middle of a lane (even if cycling

alone) if the cyclist feels it is safer, possible for argument sake because of

bad road condition on the side.

icycling, take your mountain bike to teak place next weekend. arrange to meet

your riding-partners there at 8-ish, 8:30.

We all seem to complain about Taxi's' date=' idiot cyclists etc.etc, but have you traveled on the freeways of Gauteng lately?

I travelled from the Comaro on-ramp Bassonia to the Van Buuren off-ramp  in Bedfordview yesterday afternoon. As we all know that just about every Km of these roads have road works. I set my speed control to 80km as this is the speed limit and proceeded on my way in the extreme left lane.

Well, let me tell you, I did not see any taxi's as this is not a Taxi route, but I did see X5's, ML', other Fancy Mercs & BMW's and the odd boy racer coming past me at speeds that I am sure was faster than the national average of 120km's per hour. This all from so called 'educated' people.

It just sickens me to think what our society has become. We are quick to moan and point out 'others' lack of respect yet we are the ones just as guilty of breaking the law.

To me, it is simple! What is the difference between a Taxi riding on a pavemet to get to his destination quicker or someone driving with a cell phone, either stuck to their ear or texting? NO DIFFEReNCE!! THEY BOTH BREAKING THE LAW!!!

We need to start by making a difference! If we all start respecting the rules and laws of this country and obeying them and STOP worrying what the next person is doing, then maybe, just maybe we will have a chance of making this country a better place not just for us, but for our children, grand children & great grand children.

I am not wanting to start a debate but merely stating my point of view.

May GOD Bless you all as you travel on our roads whether by Bicycle, Car, Bus, Taxi etc.

I am with you here, I wish the people complaining about cyclist would spend just a 25% of that time also reporting Taxis, drivers tossing burning cigarettes out of the their cars etc.

2. A cyclist has the same right as motorist on the road they both are classified as vehicle. My understanding is a vehicle may not overtake on a solid white line - so why is the motorist trying too? In Europe where we has taken these road rules from motorist would wait believe me!

It is currently illegal for cyclists to ride within the yellow

line.

Your point 2 is interesting as it illustrates a popular misconception.

The "solid white line" is not a "no-overtaking line". It is

defined as a "barrier line". So you may overtake if safe to do

so and as long as you do not cross over the barrier line.

If you get bust it's not for "overtaking" but for "crossing a barrier"

line.

Please read the posting by Edman on the previous page where he posted exerpts from the road traffic act regarding the use of the yellow line.

Well spoken words I agree .............but do not digress from the issue at hand..... CYCLISTS BEHAVING BADLY...... are you also one??????

Again matter of the toothpick in somebody else's eye while you have a telephone pole in yours!!!!!!!!!
Posted

jmaccelari - you are quite correct and technically you have to have 2 wheels over the barrier line to get busted!

I love this bumper sticker:

Cyclist are traffic

Posted

This is actually quite interesting.

In the first picture, the guys are INSIDE the yellow line. Did you know that this is actually illegal according to traffic law???

Bicycles are seen as legal road-going vehicles, and MUST ride within the same demarcated area as all other road-going vehicles i.e. ON THE INSIDE OF THE ROAD.

The law also further states that no vehicle is allowed to pass within 1.5 m of another when overtaking.

So by cycling INSIDE the yellow lane, we are actually breaking the law, to accommodate the motorists. And any motorist that overtakes a bicycle and tries to impress their occupants with their driving skills by showing how close they can get, are also breaking the law.

So Mr Big H camera fundi: who is actually in the wrong here, and who is the selfish idiot?

I see only one idiot here and that is you shooting your mouth off, my dear friend...... you are another typical example of the intolerance cyclists shows.

By the way as a rookie on the Hub..... show some respect and get yourself another Hub name. A old and well respected Hubber has the name, Cervelo...... you are infringing.

And finally the the 1.5m law of overtaking has been brought up which probably means on most roads in RSA when overtaking in a 4 wheels vehicle with a solid barrier line one of two laws will be broken when overtaking and that is either 2 wheels will be over the barrier line or you will be passing to close i.e. less than 1.5m, be it a cyclist or another vehicle.

Snaaks, al die outjies wat so desperaat die fietsryers se slegte gedrag probeer regpraat en justify ........ en nie wil erken fietsryers maak kakdroog nie laat my dink aan die goeie ou Afrikaanse spreekwoord wat se......

...... POEP TEEN DONNERWEER!!!!!!!!!!

You might also feel this way if you've been hit by a car, in the yellow lane, due to the cars in the road traveling to slow according to this driver, so he decided to overtake on the yellow lane, instead os using the 2 lanes available to him.

And just because i'm a rookie on the hub, doesn't mean i'm new at cycling.

Just do yourself a favour and look how motorists treat other motorists. so what chance do we have as cyclists? we do not sit inside a piece of metal with side impact bars etc ... the only protection we have is our skin.
