cycling incident this morning - kyalami

colleague arrived at work with a huge grin this morning.

 

saw a roadie bike somewhere on the kyalami road, the road narrowed to one lane and he gave way to the cyclist who was in the left lane. the guy sprinted at about 60 kay an hour (colleague watched on car's spedometer) and at the next traffic light where the road widened again, he acknowledged the colleague with a wave and apparently a very big grin.

 

colleague was VERY impressed with the big grin. said he contributed to the guy's training and he felt chuffed with himself the whole day.

 

one motorist won over to the cyclists side.

 

to the roadie this morning : THANK YOU for greeting the driver with such a big grin

Show appreciation to nice actions from drivers where possible & safe. Tomorrow they will do even more.

People appreciate the little things and by sprinting for a few hundred metres the cyclist won a driver over. Win-win situation!

The 2 bolded parts are the most relevant here, imagine the difference in the outcome of this story had the courtesy that the motorist shown the cyclist not been shown in the first place.

Me too, glad it is a positive story. I agree totally that a bit of courtesy goes a long way (and there is a long way to go to improve cyclist-motorist relations).

I find that motorists in general, will give you a break if they know your intentions. Since we lack indicators, stop lights and other stuff required to make a vehicle road worthy, we have to signal our intentions in other ways.

 

I use hand signals when I want to change lanes, direction and always (well at least when possible) thank the driver with a very clear thumbs up "thank you". 

 

A little bit of politeness goes a long way.

 

By showing our intentions, motorists at least know what our intentions are and can work around that. This helps enormously.

 

Not sure about the rest of you but my mind reading skill sucks. I like to be prepared while I am driving. To know what to do if something goes wrong. It has saved me frommay accidents in the past.

 

Sharing information helps other road users prepare for your next move.
