Hi

Shimano SLX, on a Giant Anthem x1 bike done about 3200k, had two new chains in that time.

I am not having an chain suck or shifting issues yet, but was just wondering, as they look pretty trashed to me, or is this considered normal usable wear??

They are worn...you will kill any new chain you put on as well and consequent cassette's...

It's better to replace them, with a new chain. and I dunno how new your cassette is but you may want to do them all at once.

3200km is a fair tonk

looks like you are 'bashing' the outer ring quite a lot. that is, compared to the middle chainring whose teeth seem a lot less worn/bent. unless you are Jan Ulrich and do ALL your grinding on the 'Big Ring' you might want to be more careful when bunny hopping logs/rocks haha.

Paint wear is cosmetic, so shouldnt be an issue. There are many teeth engaging the chain so if all still works, as slowbee says , why worry.

Then again, buying new toys is what makes this game fun isn't it.Smile

PS: if the inner rings are ok, just change the outer one...

No, that's not the case. Read Everything You need to Know about Bicycle chains. It's explained in there. Search for it on this site.

Message to the OP:  Those teeth are not worn but designed to be shorter than the others. That's the shifting region.

Im no expert,  but they do not look warn to me.  I have done over 5000 km on mine, original cassette is due to be replaced,  second chain due to be replaced and original jockeys due to be replaced.  My chain rings still look good,  however I clean and lube after every ride.

i've heard guys changing the chain every 1500km and the 4th change they replace the cassette, chain and chainrings. is this good

what would be the best thing to do?

For some reason SLX have this really weird "desing" for their cahinring teeth....a brand new one gave us a scare after the Monster when we though it had been chipped pretty badly. Then discovered they look like that from the start.... So they might look trashed but they are actually ok....

Hi JB.

So I am ok to still run these rings when I replace my chain and cassette in the next few hundred k's?

Dave, the answere is Yes.

New chainrings have a couple of shorter teeth to help with shifting. Have a look at the picture of a new chainring posted here.

Your chainring is still fine. One only have to replace a chainring under the following condition (these rules are for derailer bikes, single-speeds have other issues).

1) It is so worn, the chain skids across it.

2) It sucks.

3) The teeth (cogs) are worn so thin from cross-chaining, that heavy torque loads cause the pushing interface of the tooth to deform.

A worn chainring DOES NOT affect a chain, new or worn.

A few missing teeth in a chainring has no detrimental effect on cycling.  If you break a cog or two, keep on using the chainring until it needs replacement due to other issues.

On a roadbike, a chainring has a very, very long life unless it is really abused by dirty conditions and bad cross-chaining.

On a mountainbike, the middle chainring starts to suck long before it looks worn. If the sucking happens when it is clean, then, unfortunately it is time for a new one then. They don't last long.

However, I'm merely summarising a few points. I've laid it all out in a document posted here and cited many times. It may be useful to look at it.

Completely different rules apply to a rear sprocket. Here the chain enters under slack and it behaves differently.

Ride less.

yes i believe u on that, ive tried putting most of my training Km's on my stationary bike, but(like ther always is) it is not tha same as going out there.
