Novice ordeal, Name and shame the club!!

QUOTE=Mandibles]

I am a member of a club but have never attended any of the group rides. I'm a mtb'er and their "slow" group avg is advertised as up to 20km/h which is faster than I think I am capable of. I mentioned this to the club when they sent out a survey asking for feedback. Novices are not catered for at many clubs it seems.

Hi Mandibles where in Gauteng do you live if it is in Pta. you should check out epic cycles club rides you don?t even have to be a club member all are welcome and the pace is the pace of the slowest rider for te day' date=' the object is to have fun, get to know other cyclist "fun riders" The usual group avg is around 17km/h

Thanks. I know where Epic Cycles is. 17 km/h isn't novice pace by my standards. I guess it depends on the terrain though.

Thanks, will do.

I've just checked the race results of a 30km mtb race that was held in Gauteng. Out of the 600 competitors, only 200 finished with an average of 17 km/h or above. All clubs really should cater for slower riders.

Hi Everybody' date='

A most distressing experience for Rina, i can just imagine!

I looked up Rina Coetzee on our online entries database system and gave her a call this morning. [/quote']

You put in some effort - nice to see there is someone who gives a hoot.

It seems as though a few posts implied that Rina may have been a member of Cycle Lab Supercycling Club.
I would like to set the record straight' date=' in telling you that Rina was not a member of ours and was also not on one of our club rides. [/quote']

Thanks Ali. I did not see the insinuations, but the point is well straightened out by you.

I must say i never doubted the Labuschagne boets nor our club secretary David's wife Petro.
Nor did i doubt Alan the vehicle driver as knowing Alan he would never had passed a lady out on her own.

We have offered Rina a club membership as we would like to introduce her to club members of similar ability to herself and assure you and her that her next ride experience will most certainly be a very different one to what she has recently experienced.

THAT is what running and being part of a club is all about.Thumbs%20UpThumbs%20Up

In my experience of running a club for 9 years and being in contact with many other clubs over the years' date=' i can genuinely say that clubs have the interest of members at heart!

Be sfae and enjoy your weekend of riding! Smile

Its easy to make comments with years of experience behind you.!

She should have done this' date=' she should have done that...........yah, right, easy in hindsight.!

The fact is she was new to the sport, she joined a club because she probably watched SC and thought they would look after her.

She was probably hoping to learn something and get better in a safe group enviroment.

Well she did. She learnt that most cyclists in that club are elitest tossers with an ego problem.!

Great way to grow the sport buddies.!

Well put

Excuse me' date=' Any club that wants my support, my membership, my advertising, my freindship. Better prove their weight in gold.

I belong to a club who offers their time, advice, training info, help to all slow riders, help to all novices.

[/quote']

A club is not a commercial organisation that has to deserve your business. I would imagine that a club  would hate a member with the gimme gimme gimme attitude.

I am not looking for anything but friendship offer of moral support and advice. I can keep up with any of the guys / ladies in the club, So I am now helping those new / slow riders with any form of help

A club is somewhere where you give, don't just take.

I am always offering my assistance but you would not know that.

As the famous cyclist Bobby Kennedy once said when a "competitive young prick that still lives at home eating mommy's dinner"* wanted to join his club:

Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club.

There is plenty which I am already doing, as it is my choice of club.

Why is that Bruce.?

I guess its because you thought I took velo to task for congratulating Cyclelab .?

Thats not the case at all.

I meant, nobody jumped to any conclusions, the good lady got left behind by her club, thats all the facts we needed to know.!

The fact Ali invited her to join their club was a by product of the discussion.

I actually have nothing against any club, some people swear by them, I was not fond of the ones I have joined. Maybe its just me, I am open to that opinion, we cant all be hamsters and like the same thing.

Damn that is why I so enjoy MTB'ing. My boet and I an just hit the bush and not have to worry about keeping up with anyone.

Couldn't agree more but it's not all roses in MTB either.

We have our fair share of: "What, you're only doing the 40? Why even bother??" and "3 hours for that ride? Did you walk the whole way?"

A lot of make-believe Burry Standers in the MTB community too.

I see your point, but I would like to offer another thought. The statements in blue above here could be considered a chirp or friendly ribbing. Depending on the tone of voice, I would take no offence and probably have another come-back at them.

The one in red would earn a swift, sarcastic remark from me. That is not friendly or joking at all.

Porky, first you make direct reference to SuperCycling (being CycleLab). Then you say "that most cyclists in that club are elitest tossers with an ego problem.!"

Now you say you made no reference to any club, and that you have no problem with any club.

You are making a fool of yourself.

For the record, I am not a Cyclelab Club member ( I'm a former member) thus my view point could not be constued as being scewed but I will say the following,

I have partaken in their club rides in both JHB and PTA anw must say that they are very well orginised and and very well run. The club rides do cater for the true weekend warriors (thus the true band of avearge Joe's on whom our sport is dependant for its survival and to whom I as one is greatly and true greatfull for their paticipation as they are the ones who grant us the oppertunity to race and compete by spending their hard earned Rands in the cycling and related shops thus growing the industry).

When ever I have taken part in CL club rides I have always found them to be well supported from a logistical perspective and have regularly seen Lovemore supporting non CL riders who have punctured on the Craddle route regardless of whether they are part of the CL club ride or not. Personally I think us hubbers are way to quick to shoot of our mouths, maybe because its the only time where we get to say our say and we are way to quick to condem. Now I have stated clearly i am not a CL fan, however I know a lot of club members, they are one hell of a nice bunch of people and I have found that CL is always genuine in their approach to try and maky things better for all cyclist, yes just like everyone else they compete for your membership but I have found them to often go above and beyond and as such think and believe it can only be really short sighted little pip squeeks that can only critisize, please people, what have you done to make cycling a better sport for all, only once you have answered this should you consider critizing those how work to make it better for all.

So from club X)#I to Cyclelab it must have been an expensive learning curve. Lets just hope she don?t go and ride with the Cyclelab pro's.

.

Oh, okay,...... I see where you are coming from. However, you misinterpreted my post, re-reading it maybe that could have been an inevitability and perhaps I should have made it more clear.

My Referance to SC was not referancing the club or Cyclelab at all - the referance SC was to the TV show Supercycling. Actually I did say "she may have "watched" SC - "watched", been the operative word.

My intention was to say "she watched the show, heard that joining a club was a good idea, actually recommended, and did so, not realising all clubs are suitable for beginners." Which she found out later to her detriment.

Thats all, there was no malice to the Supercycling club or Cyclab intended although I can understand how you interpreted it now, that was not the intention with which I wrote it.
