It's not everyday that we as South Africans can boast about good levels of customer service... this is sad but it's a reality. So, when it does happen we tend to be surprised and want to tell everyone about it! So this is what I want to do:

I had to take my and my wife's road bikes for a service last week Thursday as we decided (a bit belatedly) to enter a quick 52km race on Saturday. We then flipped a coin to see who will do us the honors and fate decided that it should be Fritz Pinaar cycles in Brooklyn PTA. My wife dropped off the bikes on Thursday morning and lo-and-behold our bikes where ready on Friday afternoon! This is good service in my opinion but it's not where it stops...

We arrived at their shop at 16:30 and being the newbs we are asked them if they could help us with setup... BOTH of us... 1 hour before their shop closes on a friday!     smiley9.gif

A young man by the name of Wicus gladly obliged and did a thorough setup on both our bikes explaining in great detail what he is doing and giving us service and ride pointers as he went along. Having bought second hand bikes I was ready to spend a fortune on service, setup & worn out parts when I walked through the doors but Wicus actually tried his very best to keep me from spending money! How weird is that!?

Long story a bit shorter at six 'o clock my wife left the shop while me & Wicus (who should have been home by now) changed the tires on my bike... Eventually we loaded the bikes on the hitch of my car and as I slammed by boot shut I realized I had just locked my car keys in the boot! I then phoned my wife to go fetch my spare keys from home (which is on the other side of Pretoria).

I insisted that Wicus should lock up his shop and go home but he refused to leave me outside as he was afraid we might have left the keys in the shop somewhere...

He waited with me and not for a moment seemed irritated or agitated with the situation. In fact, he kept on exchanging valuable "noob-food info" the entire time...

The amazing part about all this is that:

- he never met me

- I didn't buy my bike from him

- I didn't spend a fortune in his shop

- It was my own numb-nut fault to lock my keys in.smiley36.gif

I'm a person who value service. Wicus from Fritz Pienaar obviously also have the same values...

My hat is still off to him and the shop.

Well done good sir! smiley32.gif JuriAbbott2009-11-02 06:39:17

That is pretty impressive.  I had a good experience at Cycle Lab JHB recently.  But that is seriously impressive!  Almost to the point of silly actually - the shop will close down if they keep that up!!

NCR:  Went to Tiger Wheel on Saturday to get car wheel puncture fixed.  They were flippen busy...so what do you expect, rushed horrid service?  Not these okes, they had a lady stand in the parking lot, as you get out your car she asks what she can help with and walked with you to the shop and called the appropriate oke to sort you out.

Well done.

NCR2: Just went to pick up some stuff from Megan @ Pace and Power in Paulshof.

Dont know if it is my imagination but it looks like the whole staff in that FPC branch has been replaced?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that buys my stuff from Megan.

I've always had good server from Tour de Frans in Boksburg. Plus I like to support the LBS.

When I was in hellburton I used to support Kyalami cycles. but lately I'm hearing they are becoming a bit funny with their service.

FPC in Paulshof are friendly guys and helped me choose my bike after looking for quite a while. However took the bike for a service and got it back with oil on the grips.

Unfortunately, every good story probably has a bad story. When I was looking to purchase a new mtb a year back I went to FPC in Paulshof. I had a hardtail and was looking for the same. The sales guy did a whole sales pitch as to why I should buy a full suspension. My comment that I had never ridden one prompted him to comment then how can you make an informed decision.  So far he was doing well. He then suggested I try one of their demo bikes for a week and then decide. I thought that was great.

Unfortunately after a week I had not received the promised call that the bike was ready. I gave him a chance and called him to remind him. I was told there was a delay ad it would be a few days and he would call.

I am still waiting, and have since bought a hardtail from Finish Line Cycles where I always received great service. ( before anyone says the thread is for comments on good service )

flashing red lights

Ok, sometimes its the little things that get remembered.

I'm a firm believer in always making sure my rear end is lit up when I ride, even in the daytime.

After smashing the lens and later breaking the clip of my R80-00 Ravx

rear light, on separate occasions due to my own raw, dismounted

clumsiness, I was quite amazed that City Cycles offered to send it in

to Ravx when I had basically come in to purchase a new one.

Half a week later I had a call to say it was back from "repair" and

went to fetch what seemed like a completely new unit with new

packaging, bracket and batteries nogal! no charge!Shocked

Thanks guys, you really made my day. Clap

Big ups to Tim at FPC Paulshof,

After another bike shop gave my bike back to me with a loose head set and didnt tell me the butterfly was pulling out so they couldn't tighten it properly, I did take it back to them and they were useless but did say sorry...........,

anyway, took it to FPC and they worked on it for 30 min trying all the different stem inserts and managed to get it sorted, in the end landed up only paying for the new butterfly.

Solomon's Gifts PTA North-

Went in Monday afternoon with my bike in shocking condition. Asked for a major service and replacement of some parts that were in dire need of replacement, asking them with a glimmer of hope if they could keep it down to R700.

Basically they couldn't it: the bill came to over a grand.

New cassette, new seat (WTB not a cheapie), new chain, and a major service. But they gave me a discount of over R200 and I only payed 800 for everything. Brilliant!

Cyclelab Fourways - for not making me feel like a total bike dork when I brought in my 7 year old bike after a technical breakdown last saturday, and then sorting it out including a service as it was an emergency (even though they were clearly fully booked up to the 94.7).  I have found them to be the most beginner friendly bike store in the area - some of the other shops looks at anything other than less than 18-month old carbon like something the cat brought in..

Went to a bike shop in the south to sort out gear changing problems on my road bike and was told to buy a new derailer - didn't even have a good look at the bike..

Went to Linden on the same day for a second opinion on one of their busiest days. They literally dropped everything, put the bike on the stand, straightened the bent hangar and sent me on my way - no charge.

NOW THAT IS SERVICE.
