Yep, I went to pick it up this afternoon and I'm meeting Kleintjie in Nelspruit to reunite him with his baby. I just worry about the fact that this is a market that is being created. The guy who had the bike phoned me to tel me that he had another bike the other weekend, so now I'm the guy to go to when he gets new stock in. I posted the stolen Scott MTB a couple of months ago but nobody claimed it, and expecting to find the owner I bought it off the guy and its now sitting at my place, with some poor guy in somewhere in SA still without the bike- now how do I get it off my hands?

The bikes are going up in price up here. Intern's Spes Works they wanted 15,000 mets, negotiated down to 13,000mets, and Wheelsuck's Felt they wanted 25,000 meticais (exchange about 3,8 mets to the Rand), and I negotiated it down to 18,000. I got Kleintjie's bike down to 16,000 Mets, because I'm turning out to be a "good customer". Its a quandary- now the message gets back to the slimy thief in SA that he must steal more bikes because I'm buying them!

Come again with that exchange rate?

The exchange rate varies- the Rand is strong now. For Kleintjie's bike i did the exchange on xe.com, and the 16,000 mets turned out to be R4,092, at an exchange rate of 3.910 Mets to the Rand. This time last year it was about 3 mts to the Rand.

jeepers i see the point you making here, by doing a favour for us guys over here you might be creating a market! let me know if you dont find the buyer for the scott i might be interested. non the less you doing alot of us a "moerse" favour especially on the really high end bikes and for those that dont have insurance

You haven't spotted a Gios Torino with Ultegra by any change? The bike was stolen about 6-10 months ago- my old man's bike (he had it for 20 odd years)

Can't say RL- up until the LBS guy called me this last time, I come across the bikes when I drive past the village- would not remember individual bikes- I hardly ever see road bikes up here, and there are the occasional supermarket bikes and other with cheap gruppos that end up here.

The only saving grace in this is that the market will always be there, regardless of me buying the bikes off the LBS. The only thing is that at least the bikes are returned to the rightful owner, instead of it being bought by one of the locals. After contacting the rightful owner, I leave it up to them to decide whether they want me to get the bike back for them or not. Then at least its their decision- except for the Scott sitting in my bike room!

you right Yang the market will always be there! you take out one guy and three others pop up, but what fascinates me is that these are high quality bikes! what is the average monthly salary of the people that are buying theses bikes? and the best is that they probably are paying the same for a spez as they are for a Game special as they dont really know better. i guess its the same principle as a car hijacker that steals a 500k car and gets 5k for it

There are guys running businesses in the village who are coining it.

Re the Scott, the only way that I can think of to get it off my hands is to auction it on the hub?

Hey Yang another one! as I said U da MAN! Everyone else: the guy that steals them operates in the Roodepoort (Little Falls, Strubens area) and now Fairlands it seems.
