I have avid elixirs on an anthem. the last few weeks I have a terrible low frequency squeel/vibration that I can feel through the whole bike. At points I cannot feel if the back wheel is starting to lockup or not.

I have cleaned the rotor, lightly sanded the rotor, changed the pads around left to right, changed them front to back, de-glazed the pads on a smooth cement floor, remounted the caliper and ensured everything is torqued up as too with the rotor, lightly greased the back of the pads

it still does it...help!!!!

Free Bump

I also have them on my 29er - new - noise started on 2nd ride....

I had the same on my Juicy's (prev bike) - thought it was just the bike complaining about getting that weight to a halt Wink

The sound comes from both, but more pronounced from the back.

Is it the rotor?

I can be doing 50kph or 5kph - hard barking is OK it is under moderate braking force that the problems start...

Does it happen with both front and back?

What type (Material) of pads are you using, have you tried a different type of pad

If it's both F and B sounds like you did something either to the rotors or pads, like cleaning, rubbing, sanding, bedding with a verboten substance.

don't think the frames have v-brake bosses!

You are running the Avid wavy rotors?

Change those out to smooth edged Shimano rotors. ie. they are round, not wavy or some other silly shape.

Problem solved.

your problem comes form the the jagged edges of the rotors.

The pads will bed in but its hit and miss of the vibration and squeeling will disappear.

Shimano RT-76 rotors will solving the problem

except they have been fine for over a year of pretty hard riding including the training for and riding of an epic...

so the only issue I can come up with is wear of the rotor or perhaps the resonance of the rear triangle as pivot bushings wear down...

also check that the caliper is not mounted too high. If the top of the pad still stand clear of the top of the rotor  i.e there is some clearance between the top the rotor and the top of the pads in the caliper then you need to lower the caliper a little which means removing a spacer .

also check that the caliper mount is mounted in the correct orientation to the frame. Some palooka's at bike shops mount these incorrectly thinking that it improves braking performance.

My rear disk brake ( Juicy ) squeals like a stuck pig on helium but I have found one advantage - coming up on slower traffic I briefly touch my rear brake and at the sound of the rabid pig they leap out the way much quicker than if I asked them track please.Smile

or you repalced the pads at some point and there is now vibration between the new pads and the piston.

a dab of copperslip on the back face of the pad where it touches the piston is  another remedy.

Changing the rotors has solved this for many Avid brake users though
