To the prat on the yellow tt bike who rode past us at the speed of sound on the Kragga Kamma rd in PE. If you don't like the fact that we were riding next to each other and talking, I would appreciate it If you would slow down and talk to us in a civil manner. swearing at us and calling us names is just not on. I wish I had your speed so I could catch up and return the insults. My safety is my concern, not yours. In my opinion the roads were quiet and riding two abbrest did not hinder or obstruct any one.

But hey when a rider is pumped...he's pumped...you know how it is, or knew how it was?

But I agree: You cant educate someone by racing past and swearing at them. This is not a constructive method of teaching bad cyclists the dangers of the road.tarboy2009-12-26 02:55:24

I agree ,BUT if you are talking about the section of Kragga Kamma road which goes past the Spar towards Butterfield road it is a very narrow and dangerous road with many a cyclist beign knocked over in the past.

It does however not make the swearing part okayConfused

PS: You were very brave to cycle in this horrid windTongue

I figured that if I could brave this year's Argus, I can brave anything. People who ride with me will know that I am the biggest proponent of safety. Anyway, enough said.

I agree...saftey is a big concern. But, I also agree that swearing and shouting is never going to work. Whats the proverb? "a kind word turns away wrath and brings understanding?"

I think thats the Proverb...if not, its the newest one in the book of GreyOwl!

One of my teachers says:

"Be Kind whenever possible. It is always possible..."

Swearing is off-limits. No question.

Firm, not rude or offensive, language is necessary when a cyclist put another at risk.

Above all, let's be cool and enjoy the ride!

Another problem with riding 2 abreast is the danger it places a faster cyclist in when he passes you (it's not only about your safety), and after a hard ride when you're tired and hot, sometimes a few choice words are the easiest way of dealing with things (just ask the owner of the dog that bit me while cycling on table mountain on thursday!). Definitely wouldn't slow down to discuss it with you when in the middle of a training ride.

And no I am not saying swearing is the best thing to do, but we've all done it at some stage when only given a few seconds to decide how to react...

You are right on that. I too have done the same thing a few times. Afterwards you realise it may have not been the best approach but it happens.....

When I just started cycling three years ago, I once threw a zap to a motorist who hooted at me, I felt so bad afterwards that I decided to never swear while I'm on my bike.

Now I only swear when I wipe out on the mtb.  At least then your foul language is not spat out towards another person.

Wasn't me. I'm in EP, but in East London, not PE. Been riding with some of the local triathletes, and I can't overtake them, no matter how hard I try! 'sides, my bike is white black and red.

Shockedits never cool to swear at strangers.  More often than not the effect blows up in the face of the rude person - maybe not right then, but it will at sometime.  Even if the dude is like a super euro pro, and even if the others were totol rookies, it is still better to just take a small breath and be the example not the dumb ass. every one started out somewhere and everyone ends off somewhere.  love the ride!
