Does 2 x 10 = 3 x 9 or even more on a MTB?

My bad. I'm just a big fan of logic over fashion!

Thats not to say you shouldn't buy it. If you like the look of 2x10 and it makes you feel good then buy it. It's like a lightweight seat post or carbon stem - silly and *** value for money but it makes you feel good.

Here's a silly example of 3x10 versus 2x10:

I rode the full MTN XC National Series in 2010. I hardly ever used the big ring - the courses are technical and tough. A 2x10 using the middle and granny rings would have been perfect.

I also rode SabieX in 2010 - I didn't use the granny ring there at all - a 2x10 using the middle and big ring would have been perfect.

Instead I kept my 3x10 on all year long and didn't bother with all the fidlly *** around changing them.

A 2x10 set up is great - until you wished you had a longer/shorter gear.

And I love to tinker and try stuff ;) I still have my 26r Epic that is setup with what I like (in this case 3*9) and it is my favourite bike of all time. You may note I don't mess with that

Any legs, just good gear choice ;)

I would have to take a 22*36 to Rietvlei then .... will take all day to go round there though :(

Agreed. Favourite bikes rock - old faithful. My current is a steel Niner MCR with a 32x16 SS. Once your gear is on there is no choice - you pedal - you ride. Thats how it is

See Dangle? I'm back on a Niner - are you proud of me :P

I see that they do not recommend customized gearing on xx cranks. The standard is 42\28,39\26,and if you tamper with that the smooth x glide effect is of no effect, getting the timing wrong.

Can anybody comment on that please??

I'm loving the 2x10 setup, out of this world.i'll never ever go back to 3x9,3x10.

the gearing is just the way I like it.

currently running 42\28,but want to try out the 39\26 combo.

What about fast stuff, with 39 I'm going to paddle air big time??

what gearing of the 2 would be best for a 29er??I've got 11\36 on the back.

cheers

Hee Hee I just rode Groot Marico and without thinking to check the route profile first I decided to take the training bike (old Gary fisher) as the racing bike had a puncture. As it's a training bike I have a 44/36 up front and a std 9 speed 11-32 on the back. After the 3rd hill I snapped a chain as I was putting too much pressure on it due to the gearing. After that it was up to walking a few hills when the going got too tough. Guess a 2x9 is not the way to go ha ha

I don't have a 2x10 and I am curious how one solves the ratio problem on race like that. You have district road that one used the 44t on your 3x9 setup for the first 11km, then on the way back about the last 18km I was also mostly in the 44t up front and quite often in the 11t at the back, but when it came to some of those hills one could have used the granny a bit for sure. This is a race in my opinion where the 2x10 may have come short as for half you woulf have needed the bigger cogc up front to prevent over spinning, but then if you had that setup, one would may be have had a problem on the hills. What would be the prefered setup.

Must say so far after riding a year on the training bike with it's 2x9 setup it's the first time I have had to stop and walk. Poor shoes took a beating.

Awesome race though

A quick update on the 2x10 issue.

I rode my first race(diemersfontein ultra) with the 2x10 and I'm hooked.

Not once did I feel i'm over or under geared. The 39\26 and 11\36 combo is perfect for me.At the 80km mark the real climbing started. Most of the riding was done in the 39t blade.1x10 setup will also work, but I think i'll stick to 2x10,FOR NOW!
