My experience last year on importing light components.

Received a slip in mailbox saying that SARS had bocked delivery at JIMC (Johannesburg International Mail Clearing - SA Post Office), the slip tickbox requested a copy of invoice and proof of payment.

The phone number given on the slip was never answered. However, I got the fax number from the JIMC help line - which was answered promptly. I  faxed the invoice & payment details though, three days later the parcel arrived.

Hopefully most CRC orders which are legit personal orders can be resolved as mine was.

Happend to me a couple of times, you just phone 0860111502, get the local tracking number, phone Capemail, get the email address of the clearing agent. Send through proof of purchase from your bank statement and Paypal / CRC Invoice and they clear the goods. Done this at least 3 times. No Problems, no extra fees knersis2010-01-18 07:09:31

Hi GuysI have been contacted by a number of hubbers now where SARS is requesting formal clearances on your CRC orders' date=' if you are in JHB you can contact me and i can arrange your clearance for you

What the costs Gav?

Mark thanks should have put that in R300 + vat and then whatever vat and duties we paying to customs for youI have heard now of guys in the agents building charging in excess of R800 for a once offAlso guys you can only do a formal clearance in your name 3 times a year so if its more than that best you apply for a customs code no as a sole prop.

Good price. I've heard of people quoting more, plus a percentage of the value of the shipment.

If I make you my clearing agent, does that dispense with the EMS leg of the shipping?

Posted

No as EMS are the carrier

If they need a formal clearance you will have to take the SARS release notification to mail centre and pay i think R25 handling and they will give you your parcel

best give them a call and check

On which number?

Think that's the 0860111502 number but you'll need to CRC's (parcelforce's) UK tracking number.

Thanks Thug, they managed to give me the local tracking number and I've now been able to determine that the package is being held at customs.

Hope that customs official enjoys his new derailleur, fork etc. smiley18.gif

Ok so all of a sudden a whole new economy has sprung up.

Large CRC orders used to rock up at your door, usually in less than a week. Pay the cash to the courier and you take delivery of your parcel.

Now there's a bottleneck and an additional charge of R300.

What do you need to be a clearing agent?

lets be cynical for the moment and think that this is a deliberate ploy to make CRC purchases as inconvenient as legally possible. It wont deter me of course, but. i cant help but wonder.

I think that's probably not far from the truth. I ordered a frame from Ireland in September, with a value 3 times this order, which sailed straight through customs. Now this one gets detained - WTF?!?

Well cycling can't be the only industry where end users import high-value stuff from overseas. Is the same thing happening outside of cycling?

Sars needs to be transparent about this. At what value does a shipment require clearance? Perhaps our resident clearing agent can enlighten us?
