Some of the stats seem a little strange:

If he is cycling 8 to 10 hours a week his body fat should have dropped a lot more ( I would think)??

and 6:30 to run 1km is excrutiatingly slow, unless he is pulling a tyre behind him.

I would think 8 to 10 hours of cycling a week for an average (or below average) 28year old male will easily be enough to achieve a 3:45 argus.

Agree with you that core strength is important though.

remember, hes only been cycling for 2 months since he stopped, so dropping body fat more while improving power will be unhealthy, the body need carbs and protein to make sure the body recovers after weight training/power training/explosive training, so it works against fact that he HAS TO LOSE bodyfat. I think its on par. ....another thing. he never goes out running. He ran when we did the first test, and then again when we did the improved test. thats 2 km in 2 months. not a bad time

I am no expert on training but I found that doing proper leg training in the gym helps a lot with my cycling performance. I introduced my wife to weight training and she had very good results.

One thing I don?t do is weight training in the two weeks before a race, my legs hurt to the bone during the race.

fair enough although his first run must have been a walk1 LOL

Is this program centred around cycling... ie is he very serious about improving his cycling time as a priority or is he a 'gym bunny' who decided to enter the argus and has a bet with a buddy that he cant break 4 hours.

It would be interesting to seem some real power stats or other data that backs any improvement..... ie 17 minutes in a race when he wasn't at his best the first time around is almost irrelevant and the 'improvement' in gym perfermonce doesn't have much bearing on becoming a better cyclist.

everything is centered around cycling yes. If he wants to become a better cyclist, sprinter, better climber, better shape, less bodyfat, whatever the goal might be - we build the program around that. If he doesnt want to gain power but only want to improve his corestrenth then thats what we will focus on.

I took the advice of Joe Friel in his book and added gym work to try and improve my cycling. My cycling has improved but then I have changed my riding hours from 5 a week to 12. I hope the gym has at least helped with bone density but then again perhaps the running has sorted that out. So I guess what I am trying to say is who knows about the gym work.
