In road racing SS only times the Kormorant.  NO WAYS I will be buying one.

I got my Championchip for free and with Racetec I actually use the damn chip more than once a year so buying it makes sense.

Scam of the century.

I WONT be "renting" or "buying" anything from SS.  They can stick their timing and "official race time" and whatever goes with that in a place so deep only the devil knows where it is.

how much did it cost to rent the chip?

Nothing!

You payed R50.00 and on return received your R 50.00 back.

Do not understand what the ranting is all about.

think its 50 bucks to rent and you get 30 bucks back when you give the chip back. how many people do you think actually give back those chips at the end of the day? so the timers loose huge amounts of money like this, so surely you cant blame them for charging money for the chips? come on!!!!!!! a chip costs you R80.00 and you got it for good, money well spent if you ask me

SS timing does more of the Triathlon and Duathlon events' date=' if you only going to use it once a year then i wouldn't suggest buying it. If you going to do a few races buy one, they are one of the best timers i've come across. Results are up same day usually by 4pm!!

I got one for my triathlons and for me it was a great buy![/quote']

I have to agree here - SS is by faaaar the best timing system out there.

Results correct 100% of my races, results out same day, separate times for run/cycle/swim/whatever, they use your chip as your arm/leg marking so easy to keep track, website works, queries followed up promptly - never had an issue.

They get my vote!

You got all your money back when returned, and they had people collecting at finish as soon as you stop. Was very nice, you stop they take the chip and hand you your R 50.00 straight away.

I enquired with them about buying a chip and was told that they only have them for rent at the moment. Saturday I Komorant I rented one for R50 and got my R50 back which was good because it didn't even pick me up it seems.

Go look at their Emperor's mtb results- it's a mess. My friend has a 'No data' displayed. I thought I rode a hell of a race according to the results. But there are plenty females who finished ahead of me, but they classified as males.

And if they get the DQ s right, my results will look better.

I count 9 "no datas" in 326 riders. Thats a failure rate of 2.7% - if those 9 people email Spectrum Sport I"m betting it'll be zero out of 326 by the end of the day (including your friend). Better a "no data" with time thats allows someone to ID themselves than just deleting the data and someone having no result at all...

Scannig the names - Samantha was classed as a girl, Liz too, Anastasia too, Natasha wasn't. Perhaps she ticked the wrong box or an SS employee typoed??

I know I sound like a devotee but email them and I bet they'll make the changes...so your friend gets his results you get "chicked" by even more women....

These guys are good. But I'd like to have my own MTB board. If you forget your number..and it is typed wrong, it is difficult to correct. Happened to me at the Telkom MTB.

BUT - a couple of emails and they sorted out the problem. They are good and money spent with them is well spent

Just as a matter of interest. If a lady is entered as a male, this is not SS mistake. They are not responsible for data entry. It is normally done by the likes of Entytime, Cycle lab or alternatively the race organisers do it themselves. Unfortunately SS's results are only as good as the data they receive.

Goodday all! Thanks for responding on SS Timing. I see that there is alot of uncertainties with regards to chips and timing and costs and data etc. Let me give you the rundown on how it works out there.

- Race organiser asks for quotes for timing of event

- For MTB events SS Timing supplies the number boards that has a timing chip in it to the race organiser.

- He must make sure that he hands it out at events and have to capture all the data

- He hands that data to SS Timing who use equiptment to record time when going over finish lines with timing board.

- SS Timing also have a manual backup at all events for the odd person the system missed or the board that is placed on the wrong place on the bike or number boards that has been cut by athletes etc(you will be amazed at what they will do to the boards)

- Organiser takes back all number boards and pays SS Timing for damaged or lost boards - no extra cost to the athlete.

- Inexpensive way of timing event

For triathlon, duathlon events

- Same as Mtb but race organisers do not take responsibility for the timing chips. They decide if it is in the race budget to pay for finish times only or split times and finish times.

- Race organiser have to make sure that athletes bring timing chip to race and record number next to name.

- If this step was missed - no data will come up with time

- Athletes have to buy or rent timing chip

- To buy is R80 and it is used in the Teavigo series, BSG Energade Series, JHB Tri Series, Sasol Cross Series and several single events. For athletes doing odd race there is an option to rent chip for R50.

- It is still the organisers choice to make use of SS Timing or ChampionChip or Winning Time. All seperate companies.

Road Cycling - Currently SS Timing are not selling chips at these events as they are in the process of designing a less expensive timing chip and more effecient way of timing road events. - Something similar to MTB system - Watch this space.

-NO DATA's is not SS Timing mistake - as you can see there is a time recorded next to a no data so that means the data went missing when it was captured.

-SS Timing strive to give on the day results and loaded on the website by then end of raceday.

- All queries are promptly done via email

Please send me any further questions, comments etc. - in order for us to be able to give you, the athlete a better service
