chain life

I snapped my chain recently which I take as a warning that its knackered.

I am running a shimano HG73 (MTB)

My new chains arrived today from CRC and I was quite surprised when comparing the old chain to the new that the OAL had incresed by about 8mm I didnt think there would be such a difference.

Now after checking my records I see I have done about 1600 kms on the chain which is also scary as I thought prior to checking that I had only done about 1000

Good thing is these chains work out at 180 rand with vat and shipping so pretty cheap to change based on the above I am going to keep a closer eye on my km's and look to change the chain every 1500 km's

Does 1500kms sound reasonable

Crasher, see my previous post regarding "stretched chain"

Don't replace willy nilly....no real need to.

Use some sound bsic principles to decide when it is time to replace your chain.

Rather tell us how/when your chain snapped? Were you crancking it uphill? Granny gear? Muddy race? etc etc.

I'm interested to hear the gory details!!

I've done ~1750km's on my chain and although it is showing some wear...it is still within specs and will not be replaced untill it is really necessary to do so....

If take good care of the chain you'll geet 2000km out of it. Lube and clean before and after every ride.

Is it only on a mtn bike that your chain lasts for 2000km or also road bike? I've probably done about 6000km now on my chain, I lube it like once a week or before a race.

Yes I was cranking it when it snapped so it was under heavy load

I without fail clean and lube entire drivetrain after just about every ride

Only been through 3 or 4 muddy rides and not excessive mud and not excessive distance

Ok so maybe might be a bit premature based on above will see how this one goes

Thanks for the replies and info

I think JB said this as well but a chain do not snap because of wear. It snaps either because of bad shifting, bad assembly or it a factory dub. So a broken chain is no indication of end of life.

So a broken chain is no indication of end of life.?

Are you saying that the chain is still fine after snapping and that a new link will sort out the problem?

To take the "bad assembly" out of the equation I use the SRAM quicklinks from CRC. Haven't snapped a chain since using them.

I use them on Shimano chains and they work fine.

I average around 3500km on my road bike chains before I replace them.

are you kidding? I do 10 000km on a chain.

I would say 5-7 years. My current chain has actually shrunk. smiley36.gif

10000kmShocked and how's you're blades and cluster after that?

I use a Dura Ace 10spd chain and clean and lube regularly and the most I have done was just over 4500km

there was nothing wrong with the blades but I changed the casette just because I got a good price on it. Remember DA is softer the Ultegra and 105.
