Mtb Rims

I got some Alexis Rims that came a standard on my 2005 siverback sierra.

they show signs of rust on the spokes (suppose due to my neglect as my road bike got the bed in the dining room)

what I would like to know is it worth replacing the spokes with stainless steel or should i replace the wheels altogether.

Now what would you guys suggest as I just ride for fun and dont want to spend an arm and a leg . Sweetie is a bit tight with the money from the sale of the car so I have to watch my buget. perhaps no more than R1500 will be my buget if I play the cards right Wink

If you got decent hub..deore or upwards, I'll keep the wheels and just replace the spokes with DT spokes. If you really want to you can upgrade to Mavic 819 tubless rims...But ja..there goes the budget.

If the rust is on the spokes like you say, they are galvanised steel spokes which are common on low-end bicycles. Even cheaper bicycles nowadays have stainless steel spokes. There's nothing wrong with these spokes per se, but in the long run, with athletic riding, you'll need to true your wheels and rusted spokes in rusted nipples means you cannot get them to move.

I am not familiar with Alexis rims, only Alex rims. If it is the latter, I doubt that the spokes are galvanised, since Alex rims are quite upmarket. Can you describe where the rust occurs? Perhaps it is on the rim eyelet, which is not a problem, other than it creates small creaks and snapping sounds when you ride. Very irritating.

Thanks for the replies I checked again they are Alex dm 18 rims. Rims and nipples are in excellent condition and it only seems to be the rust on the spokes themselves. Now me not being a pro rider and just a social rider trying to get my weight under control and just going out to enjoy myself but I dont like to be riding and having my spokes snapping. So i think I should go the dt spokes route that Mud Dee suggested . Thanks for the advice Guys much appreciated

I suggest you don't bother, if fear of snapping spokes is your primary motivator. They won't snap. Besides, if they really are galvanised steel spokes, I doubt the rest of the bike's components will justify an expensive upgrade to stainless steel spokes. One spoke costs R10 or so, you have 72 of them on your bike. A (decent) build will cost you about R900. Your hubs probably won't last that long either. Just ride the bike and when it really falls apart, get a new one.

I make a living from building wheels and I won't sleep if I hear you wasted money on components that aren't justified by the rest of the bike.

Polish the ugly spokes with a bit of brasso. They'll look new for a week or so until they get wet again. In the old days, owners of dikwiel bikes used to shine their galvanised spoke bikes with Coca Cola, I was told when I was a youngster. Try that if you want to fiddle with the spokes.

Regards

Iets is weird hier?

On is 'n swaar Tandem paar.

SilverBack Sierra, thats sort of midrange for them is it not, about R6K-R7K Rand? Don;t know the brand so couldbe cheaper.

Stainless steel can rust. It's steel after all. It's just very difficult to get it too rust if the spokes are well made.

Might be worth while replacing just the rusted ones.

The current spokes should not break if the wheel was built correctly.
