Last week my wife gets a call from 'Albert from SARS' as a courtesy to confirm that she has received her refund of R6900. Mrs W tells the helpful call centre dude she doesn't have internet and will check at the bank. 'Albert' says he'll phone at 12h00 to confirm. Mrs W checks to find a deposit of R69000 made ( any guesses where this is headed). 'Albert' phones at 12h05 (when has a government employee ever phoned when they say). Mrs W says will he give her his number as she hasn't been to the bank; he gives her the SARS call centre no and his cell (to help her finalise the query). Numbnut doesn't bargain on the fact that the missus owns a nursery school an about a third of the parents work for SARS. Needless to say she doesn't all, neither does he and the deposited cheque hopped sky high

You'll be surprised to know how high their sucess rate is. I've got a family member working at a bank and she says they catch suckers with scams like these everyday.

The ABSA confirmation emails I think are an internal ABSA scam. My grandfather is with ABSA and my mother and uncle do his banking for him. Everytime they log in to ABSA they get one of those emails. Of course it just gets deleted everytime.

Have they reported it to ABSA? The banks are usually quite proactive with regards to these things.

I get 3 of the ABSA emails a day and don't even have an account with them. I have also recieved the SARS eamil this week....and I have won the Canadian Lotto (7x since last Monday), the UK, Irish, and what I think could be a Nigerian one as well. Big%20smile

In the last 4 days my Gmail spam folder has accumulated 13 emails from 'ABSA'. That's more than the number of emails trying to sell me Viagra.

That is how cleaver they get it seems, he  pulled his statements from internet banking and it looked exactly like it was a eft transfer, don't know how they did that..
