Cerv?lo's new west coast test facility has yielded its first fruit, an ultralight carbon road frame dubbed 'Project California' that the company claims to weigh just 700g in a 54cm size.

Listen carefully to the video posted on Cerv?lo's web site, however, and it seems the prototype may be even lighter as the one provided to Cerv?lo TestTeam rider Thor Hushovd was just 648g.

Here is Carlos and Thor checking it out.

I think going for such light frame is pretty pointless and silly really. As far as I know the UCI limit is 6.8kg for a bike. That weight is already pretty easily attainable using a decent 1kg frame and a selection of other semi decent parts. So why try go to crazy low frame weights when its not needed?

The benefit of a light frame is that power meters and other "heavier" accessories can be added to the bike, and still have a sub 6.8kg bike.

Mark my words, within 2 -3 years, we will have sub 500g frames, just a stiff as the current ones. Why, because they can.

Maybe they would even look at disc brakes for road bikes?

Shouldn't they rather spend the money on designer wheels?  I mean, we all know rotating weight is much more important than the frame weight?

...where my coat?

There is a market for light bikes. Weightweenies are always trying to build the lightest bikes- UCI be damned! Major street cred in some places for sub 5kg bikes...

We had our Cervelo's weighed before SA's.  Out of all the sponsored bikes ours were the lightest. The smaller frames were 6.4kg with a PT in the back wheel and mine was 6.6kg with the PT built into the Zipp 202's.  Cervelo rocks:-)  Except that we had to strap tools to the bike to make them heavier;-)  I rode with my training wheel which bought it up to 7kg.
