garmin 305 edge

Slowjoe - be careful about GPS city. When stuff comes in from overseas, you have to pay other charges at the post office based on value of the goods. At minimum I am guessing that it is VAT. Which means that if you get the 305 plus economy shipping for $337, it will be R2,375 plus VAT on the base price which will come to another R300 odd coming to a total of R2,675 with the hassles of waiting for it to arrive, hoping the cronies at SAPO dont steal it etc.etc. - probably better to just go to Sportmans Warehouse who were selling for about R2999.

found some specs on gpscity, seems u can also get cadence sensor for it, so shud definately support cycling. the big question is does it have altitude meter?? My biggest interest in buying a gadget is getting profile maps of where i ride, need to test my new profile utility i wrote for my trainer :)

maybe the cs400 wud be good enough option.

I bought a polar instead of the Garmin because the battery life on the garmin was a problem when I did the Epic. I was not sure if I could get to an electrical point in order to recharge it everyday. If there a solution?

What would you say are SportTracks' specific limitations' date=' FD?

P.S. SportTracks' developer is due to holiday in Cape Town in October.

It seems lacking when I look @ some of the graphs the polar guys show me.

How do u know the developer?

the garmins is prob. a nicer option if you play in the mud. How much sense does plotting the route make for roadies ?

hey word i emailed greg, he sez :

The two devices are essentially identical ? in fact the Forerunner has a few more functions to cater for running as well. In bike mode it?s identical to the Edge ? has altitude, virtual training partner etc etc. The only thing one has to buy extra to use it with a bike is the cadence sensor. Hope that helps

ok slowjoe, that was it. and also the size of the display but that is a very personal consideration for me (i can't wear my specs when training indoors and trust me on this, i am BLIND without them so i needed the biggest display i could find...

word i guess ur right' date=' things seem cheap when u just do the direct conversion Disapprove[/quote']

It very much depends on what the exchange rate is doing (not too long ago we still had US$1=ZAR6)

Also on the more expensive Garmins the saving is much more.

I agree that for R2999 at Sportmans Warehouse, it is not worth ordering the Edge direct from USA. That is a very good price!

However take the Garmin 60CSx:

GPS City US$370 x 7 = ZAR2590 + VAT & shipping etc say max R3300 total.

Compared to

gps-shop.co.za R 6,269.00

http://www.gps-shop.co.za/shop/product.asp?pID=320&cID=7

This is a very nice unit but a bit big for use on the MTB.

Will be nice for mountaineering use...

I think I will wait for the new Etrex HCx range due later in 2007 and decide then what to put on my Christmas list to upgrade my trusty monochrome Etrex Legend with.

This does however not have HR, which I don't have yet; but if I do get something like the Edge (R2999...tempting) it will mean that I will have to start training instead of just having fun on the bike... Wink Ouch

1. I have got the Polar software... I respect your view, but I still vote for ST.

2. I know the developer via the ST Forum.

You could build yourself a portable double AA cell charger like I did:

(Similar units are available in pre-built form from accessory manufacturers.)

Worked fine on audax rides up to 600 km/40 hours.

I am also trying out a solarpouch:

Slowjoe - Who did you order from?

Please let us know what the final cost amounts to. As far as I know there is no duty on navigation equipment; you only pay VAT & the clearing charge.

As I said previously, I have the Edge 305 and love it to bits. But, being a delicate piece of electronic equipment, things do go wrong from time to time. The first place that I would go for help, tips and tricks is here: http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=5506eddfcaf3ef4945348f64ab229a57&board=55.0

There is a wealth of information available, and the forum members are quick to respond, just as on our own HUB!Thumbs%20Up
