Ysterman Posted April 28, 2010 Share There are supposedly a lot of no-no?s or taboo?s when it comes to maintaining bikes when you talk to certain people/shops ? but that?s mostly bullsh$t ?<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Kitkat, where are you based ? there are options, I?m still learning but perhaps can help with some pointers ? if you?re interested pm me
Snoek Posted April 28, 2010 Share Toss the Dale and get a bike with Sram components(Scott Spark 35). Sram will last much longer than Shimano.
slowpoke Posted April 28, 2010 Share wtf!?!?!?!?! i don't even spend R5k servicing a suzuki SV (FULL service including replacing chain and sprockets) AND a honda NXR (replacing chain) AND doing a whole whack of repairs on a Mongoose Meteor (i did hurt my poor baby - the honda CBR had a go at me about hurting his brother so revenge by the 2 wheelers was sweet). you were definitely taken for a ride on that! i have and ride and maintain 3 motorbikes and 2 bicycles but i certainly don't spend what you spend - take the other advice given here - find a new lbs or learn to do it yourself

lou777 Posted April 28, 2010 Share Like to see this bike. What fork? What groupset? Where did you service it? What Cannondale?
kosmonooit Posted April 28, 2010 Share Servicing cannondale shocks generallly requires special tools?and?skills so its best going to the guys who can do this properly, and there seem to be a few in GP, so I wouldnt try take that on myself even though I do all my own servicing now?( I got?3 x 'dales as well). As for the rest, it's all standard components. I gave up taking my bikes for service to lbs and dealing with fat invoices for stuff I was never too sure about, though I do go back for the odd bits & pieces now, and specialist work for which I dont have the tools or skills.?Why not use one of these free lancers who advertise here and who will do a house call? They can also explain and advise on what you need to get, and you can do that online either with CWC or CRC in the UK, and then have the components fitted.? Then you can really see and understand whats going on, and control the costs. And you will also find many a eggspurt opinion here on the hub.? ? kosmonooit2010-04-28 08:55:
kitkat Posted April 28, 2010 Share Tx Gummibear Serviced it originally at Westrand (the only 'dale authorised store I know) then went to Cycle fusion who were pretty good with spares prices and now for convenience have taken it to Solomon's. Oh yes also had to replace the headset! That def added to the R5k. But think am due (my poor baby has certainly done well for so long) for an upgrade. BTW was XTR casette. Am DEF going to do one of Johan Bormann's workshops! Nice tip on the freelancers Kosmonooit

Daft Vader Posted April 28, 2010 Share Whoa Silver... Let's just think this through before we cry WITCH... XTR Cassette - R1600 - R1900 I guess.Headset - R1000 (XTR specc'd bike, so no skimping here)Chain - R300 oddFork Service (including seals etc) - R1000Brake Pads??Chainrings?? This is starting to get close and these are just estimates off the top of my head. Maybe it WAS a R5k service. If you want to run XTR, you must be prepare to pay to replace these parts when they wear out. You probably could have saved half by using XT or SRAM components. As for the fork, that prob would have cost you anyway. Oh, and this from someone who rarely uses local bike shops and does own servicing.Daft Vader2010-04-28 08:12:
Ratty Posted April 28, 2010 Share now that you have spent all that money replacing things, why not ride the bike for a little while longer before upgrading otherwise all that money spent will be for nothing.

You may or not be overspending on your bike stuff, but Daft Vader's break down pretty much sums it up in line with what you've had done.As long you feel you're getting out what you're putting in, would also reccomend the fork workshop.
