On your mountain bike handlebars, next to your grip, which one is mounted first, the brakes or the shifters? Does it make any difference?

Whatever works for you but normally it's brakes first and then shifters. With Sram and Avid you can attach the two to one clamp and it frees up some space. Shimano shifters can be moved along the clamp to adjust reach.

After some fidling I see that my Deore shifters have a plastic piece with the indicator in it that stops me from getting the brake nice and snug against it. What a pain.

I changed to SLX shifters for this reason, the indicators are removable so you can run them inside or out. I like having my brakes on the inside so I only need one finger to pull them.

Well, I have learnt the following about the Deore shifter:

2-Way release allows shifting from various riding positions: the upper lever still performs the same shift function, butit can now swing in either direction allowing it to be released by the thumb or index finger

Not that it makes much difference to me!

And looking at the SLX prices on CRC (R470 for a pair, pluss shipping), its going to have to wait a while...!

:) you can remove the indicator on the XT shifters. If you take them off the bike you will see plates to cover the place where the indicators were when removed.

Ya, I'm curious about that.. I wanted to try swopping my bake levers to the inside... but i couldnt find these supposed "plates". is it only the new xt, or the last version too? I dont have the model number, but I have the older one that looks like the picture below... (if the picture works)

remove the two little black screws to take off the windows, then look under the windows to see if there is a little round cover plate you need to cover the hole.

I think only the new black ones have it though... with the two way shift release lever

There is no cover plate for that XT model. but you can take off the indicator, and make a duct tape cover. i did it and it was hundreds for 2 years.... infact its still 100's, but lying in a spares box!!

My XTs had cover plates. It was on the inside of the indicator cover.
