The plumbing industry is also full of plumbrs that think they can run a bussiness when they can not run a greasy stick up a dogs arse

Sounds ideal, a plumber that's also a veterinary proctologist. Fix the bog and impale your dog on the way out. sorted mate!

if CRC is banned in SA I will eat a deraileur. That would be anti competitive. Why on earth would any economy want to protect reseller margin. Dutes an bans are to protect local manufacturing and to prevent dumping which kills jobs.

Funny you mention that it will kill jobs but you don't think about the jobs lost locally because of the purchases on CRC it goes both ways this debate will continue to go on and on until verdict is served.I refuse to purchase anything from them purely because I have loyalty from my bike shop and have a relationship with them.

An honest question - why are there import duties on complete bikes and not on bike parts? Is there an industry that assembles bikes that they are trying to protect?

Posted

it is shocking that there are cycling shops wanting to ban CRC - they are afraid of competition!

I honestly couldnt have thought of better statement than you have just made. Once again someone that took the bull by the horns & is making a pretty roaring success of it at the moment but on our local shores is CWC. So apart from the overseas supplier CRC we have our very own competitor & as you guessed no one else likes it very much & i stand under correction but also heard that they are trying to get them closed down as its putting a dampner on their business - Ag siestog someone call a waambulance

Well done to the boys of CWC, you are a model that everyone should be following whether it be customer relations or just simply picking & packing the item. Not too mention great prices.

Here is the real kicker for me, I got better service, attitude and overall experience from the internet(cwc) than from the walkin shops so how can they justify asking more....

Probably not anymore, but I believe we did many years ago.?

However, there are inconsistancies in the tariff system, nobody denies that, and in all likelyhood its a hangover from the 80's & 90's when SA was a closed economy, most local indistries were heavily protected and as SA desperately needed funds in the form of duties and taxes, virtually all imports were dutied.

But as our economy opened up duties have systimatically "come down" to very much in line with international norms, except for some major industries like clothing and steel which are still heavily protected.

Over the last 10/15 years most duties (except for the two industries mentioned above) have been reduced or scrapped completely,I forsee more of the same in the future and not an increase, as some industry players are hoping for.

So Yeah, just hang in there, it will change, government departments are typically very slow and I doubt very much if the cycle industry are high on their agenda.

CRC or any other company will NEVER be banned as long as they conduct legal business in SA.

I get the feeling some folk are just trying to use scare tactics - South Africa is a free market open economy, you can trade with whoever you like as long as its done legally by both parties.

Free trade will NEVER change in SA, its against everything our constitution and markets are built on.

Dont even give it a second thought.

Well, not totally. I tried to start a online bicycle parts shop. Phoned Shimano overseas, they put me in contact with the local distributer, Cool Heat. The local distributer said "No way hose!". The reason was that an online shop will kill the local shops and that online shops cannot provide "club rides".

They would only supply me stock if I had my own "walk in" bicycle shop. Erm, the point of an online shop is, well... to be online.

Nothing like killing competition he?

Its a slightly differant scenario - Coolheat are obviously the appointed agents by Shimano who has a sole agreement with them - so yeah, I am sure they said No, but you can still buy Shimano parts from CRC or any other dealer anywhere in the world and import it into this country freely and resell them if you like, no one can or will stop you.

Local commercial agreements are differant to International trade agreements - but Yeah....*sigh* lack of competition is what this thread is mostly about hey.!

I heard a similar birdie tell me this last year. That particular birdie has interests in DTI enforcing this, especially since that little birdie also has to cough up for being a naughty boy with price fixing.

I dont quite understand your post, do you mean the "birdie" has "friends" at DTI and they will enforce this.?

Or do you mean he "hopes" DTI enforces this ruleing.?

If its the former, I have bad news for him, DTI dos'nt work like that, if its the latter I think he will have his hopes dashed, increasing tariff protection in this day and age is very unlikely unless you are a manufacturer and can prove an "unfair practise" like dumping.

Either way, news looks bleak huh.! :D

Hopes DTI enforces.

The bad birdie was boasting they they (the flock of bad birdies) where already alerting SARS to CRC parcels last year during the Argus. They where telling them to check all the parcels (but I cannot say how successful they where).

I personally dont have an issue with that, I guess the implication was that parcels were getting through and not attracting the relevant duty / tax.

I am against all unfair practices and if some people were been enriched unfairly due to non compliance then they should be reported and held to book.

Other than that a legitimate importer who pays duties and taxes has nothing to fear by the report to SARS.
