Im planning to do my first official race on the 8th of September.

The Makro-Fujitsu-Siemens Cycle race in PE to be excact. As this is my first race I am a bit clueless as to what to expect and what I should take with me.

I do not belong to a cycling club and don't pay any license fees so can I just pay my R100 entrace fee and race?

I am planning to do the 100km race and was wondering what I need to take with me on the road ie puncture repair kit, food wise ect.

Any tips from fellow hubbers will be apreciated.

All depends on the time that you are looking to do, sub 3? a bar, a goo and two bottles of your chosen drink.

Looking for 5 hours, need more food and will have to stop for drinks.

take a tube, a bomb, tyre levers minimum. If you are worried about more punctures take two tubes some glueless patches and a pump.

Good luck for the race, relax and enjoy

Thanks Foe some very good tips Im just looking to survive it not sure about what time though :-)

Not sure what time I'll do ,but I have been training for the last 4months doing about 40km on a daily basis with a rest day here and there so Im hoping to finish.

I actually wanted to do a race with not more than 60km ,but thought what the heck I might as well just do this race.

The other options for this race is to short for me ie 10km, 30km. I wish they had a 60km option though.

wisecrack if you do 40k's a day u should be fine! I bought my 1st bike sept last year, we went to kyalami 2x per week for a few laps and did a 60km ride 1x per weekend, no other indoor training. 6 weeks later I did the Amashova race down in Durban 106km, definately a doable distance and an awesome feeling to finish a distance race for the 1st time! Enjoy!

Wisecrack, the most important is to have a great ride, relax get into a bunch riding at your speed and enjoy. I remember my 1st ride I thought I was brave and did the 20K race. I was so nervous at the start I kept on asking the person next to me to hold my bike so I could go and widdle.  I was such a novice I heard everyone talking about gu so instead of asking and looking like the novice I was, I went of to the LBS and purchased about 10 pks of gu. Took 1 gu in the car on the way to the race another while trying to force down breakfast in the parking lot and I had'nt even started. Then 2 on my 20k race.... I was so gu'ed up I was bouncing off the walls late into the night. Then it wasn't funny but know it has become a party story!!

Enjoy and let us know how it went

Good Luck

lol....I remember when I was still running and entered my first marathon. I was such a newb and started of to fast.

At the 32km mark I hit the WALL and from there on it was pure hell.

I did finish the race though and learnt some important lessons.

Thanks for the advice so far and @Joss this being PE chances are the wind will blow the whole day.
