Crashes like these are nasty.

And the answer to "how did it happen" is "quickly".

I sympathize with all involved in incidents like these.

I was involved in a crash once and another time it was only by grace from above that I managed to NOT be involved in an incident like this and the feeling directly after both was the same. After my fall, I lay in the middle of the intersection and took count of my fingers, arms, toes, legs, chest, head... who know for how long... Same thing after almost being involved in a crash as above... I remember taking stock of body parts whilst on the bike. Auto-pilot of NOTE.

Lads, I'm glad you're both alright.

G-E-N-T-L-E group hug... ribs still touchy!

Bos had to make a very quick decision under sever stress, and he made the right one. There was enough help around. If he had anything to hide he would not have been part of this discussion.

And God willing I'll be in Knysna in 2011 to try again!

Wannabe, Im really glad youre ok. I was scanning the race reports and even phoned the bikeshop in knysna to try figure out if you were ok. I was pretty much in tears when wrighting my previous mail, as it was really really uncalled for And I did care, I was just helpless there..

Unfortunately there is movement in the bunch all the time and You clipped a wheel. Its happened to all of us, you just unfortunately couldnt recover as we were flying, and had a really nasty fall.

After really just staring at the scene in shock and seeing guys came to your rescue, I rode on, I would have just stood there as I know nothing of first aid. My friend is a doctor and the monday morning in the car back to Cape town he gave me a 5 hour first aid and trauma lecture.

Anyway, I tried to catch the group, mainly because I was riding into a gentle headwind I never cought up with them and rode a verry painfull solo ride the last 30km though Im sure not what you experinced;) . They rode a 3:02, I rode a 3:09

I guess we all learn from these things (including slowpoke's medical advice). Glad you're both OK, hope those ribs heal nicely, and that you get some lovely new kit.

Bos, I respect your honesty and wanna-b, your can-do attitude and positivity. All those qualities are gentlemanly.

I guess, in life, the glass should always be at least half full ... and if it's half-empty, you're probably Julius Malema.

It's easy to look at a situation and say what you'd have done. None of you except Bos were there, and he made a judgement based on what he thought was OK. I don't know the guy, but from reading his posts etc he seems like a pretty decent bloke. In hindsight, he says he should have stopped. I don't agree. Firstly, it was a race, and there were marshals and others to help out. Its not the same as being a solo climber onEverest stranded and having people walk past because they selfishly need to summit. Some people on this forum are just too bloody pathetic for words, snapping into 'moral' mode at the drop of a hat. If people were expected to stop every time someone falls there'd be no race, especially with MTB. I've fallen on descents before and had guys bunnyhop over me, ride over my bike and not once help out. Am I crying? No, it's a race. Get over yourselves FFS

From the "Real Wannabe"

Hindsight is a wonderfull thing, but no one knows how they would react in a similar situation.

At least Bos looked around, saw cars stopping next to wanna-b, and knew he would receive help. Bos tried to establish afterwards what the fallen cyclist's stats was. HE WAS CONCERNED and showed it.

SO LIGHTEN UP AND GIVE THE GUY A BREAK!!! (and no, I do not know Bos, met or have spoken to him...)

Bos was right in a way not to stop, he saw help arriving and went on his way. If there was no one else around he should of stopped just make sure Wannabe gets help. So many more accidents happen casue of rubber necking and ppl stopping to "see"

If you not a first aider/medic/doc call for help and be on your merry way. Nothing worse than getting to a accident and ppl wont let you through. Or when u tending to some one there is a loud mouth that is shouting how bad the injures are and trying to tell the medics what to do, nothing puts a person more at ease when someone is shouting "Geez look at all that blood."

Wannebe glad u ok mate and Boss u made the call and dont 2nd guess it . Thats why u having sleepless nights. What is done is done. If you keep putting urself down it will get worse mate.

To err is only human, and last i checked we all were.

Bos has been treated unfairly in an honest response to wanne-b's request.

Who gave others the right to publicly judge and humiliate Bos thereafter? How would you feel if it were you, having made the same judgement call having weighed up all the options and still thinking it was the best and more importantly the correct decision.

He has shown genuine concern for his fellow cyclist and competitor and ensured the necesary attention was being duly paid prior to continuing his race.

i agree with capecyclist and "real wannebe" :) Ultimately it's between Bos and Wanne-b

Geez, I heard at my LBS about several crashes last weekend.

Well done, Bos, for assessing that wanna-b had help. And being honest to how this crash left you, man.

Wanna-b, get well soon.

Those that criticized Bos, take it easier next time. He is only human. B)

Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone. I never doubted that I'll get the help I might need on the road. And Bos, you're the man!

I'm recovering really well and I have no regrets - just gratitude to the Lord and all who lent a hand in any way. It's just opened my eyes again to how fragile we are out there, no matter how skilled and careful we think we are. Look out for the white helmet on a white and black Merida 905 in the Somerset West area.

And never ride without a helmet! It saved my life.

Another great Hub thread. Judge, Jury & Excecutioner!

Keyboard moralists in action again.

There are a few sensible Hubbers in between. Thank goodness.

Bos. Chill. Its just The Hub. You cant take everything seriously (except the good things)

wanna-b. Bummer you crashed, at least you did a proper job of it!

Glad to hear that you are (mostly) OK and I love your positive attitude.

I will never forget the numerous accidents that I have witnessed or stopped at.

THEN I just want to accuse everyone for not doing this and not doing that.

GEEZ guys we are not all PHYSCO and we do not all know what is going to happen next.

At times that I have stopped I Pray that I never did.

Some things just shock a person totally into the next century.

Glad you are going to be OK, Wanna-b.

On another note Why was there NO following Marshal or Think Bike officer?
