MEYER1

1  Wanneer moet jy se genoeg is genoeg?

Sterkte.

What is the problem that you are refering to?

Politics, dangerous roads, drugs, everything?

Generally if you can come home from a ride feeling good about yourself and with a smile on your face keep on going!

MEYER1...that's quite a general question. Do you race or just ride for fun?

If you only race and try to make a living out of it (which would probably be only about 0.05% of the cyclists in our country, then there has been a lot of arguments on the Hub stating that it is not worth it.

However if you are just the normal guy/girl doing funrides and pushing your limits a bit there - my personal view is that you never have to stop! I absolutely adore my sport and can not for one day imagine my life without it. I'll always find a way to ride whether it's on the road or in the bushes...no question of stopping and i will never be able to sell my bikes.

Ek sal s? jy moet hom ondersteun so ver moontlik sodat hy heel belangrikste dit kan geniet!

Kom ons wees realisties...daar is baie min mense wat regtig 'n lewe kan maak uit fietsry, so 'n "back-up plan" moet maar in plek wees as die fiets-ding nie uitwerk nie. To get some kind of an education should be you and your son's first priorite IMO. Al is dit net 'n basiese kurses - by 'n universiteit soos Stellenbosch is daar altyd 'n lekker klomp fietsryers wat goed kompeteer in die plaaslike liga wedrenne, so dit behoort ideaal te wees as hy by so plek kan aansluit.

Meyer, As jy ophou fietsry wat gaan jy dan doen vir ontspanning.?

As jy iets anders in gedagte het soos draf, golf of bergklim, gaan try dit.

Meyer - I started my son cycling as a form of exercise and something fun that he can enjoy (we can also do it together and that's brilliant!). The fact that he has managed to do very well and who knows may one day end up in a pro team or whatever in my opinion is a bonus.

I would be much happier if he ends up a 'lifelong' cyclist than a miserable serious pro cyclist (because of pressure of some kind!). Of course if he ends up a happy lifelong cyclist who is also a pro hey bonus again! And I have noticed that there are many of those around so it isn't impossible.

On the other hand there are also many levels of success in cycling, in my case if I whip DR's skinny ar$e now and again (even if it is 'unfair!) I am happy. In my sons case he wins a race now and again and has many other races where he just goes out and enjoys!

At the end of the day I think he's a well balanced individual with potential but also has other priorities that are important to him (paintball and passing matric being 2 of those, ok so maybe the matric is more important to his mother than him at this point!).

Cycling has also provided him a good 'excuse' when confronted with peer pressure to take part in some 'dubious' activities so that also helps!

Your question seems to be, when should I stop riding?

You should stop when its not fun anymore, simple, has nothing to do with age.

Well said TitusTi and BB. The point is that you cannot continue with anything long term if it is not fun / enjoyable.
