Dude, they're hunting you down on the Parking thread. You better not say your kids are "special" so they need helmets... or else!!

I know!

There were an awful lot of these...

If only life was as simple as a funny one-liner...

The world is a big place and exploring it is not always a betrayal or a life decision. SA is fun, but lots of other places are too. Unfortunately most South Africans' experience of "overseas" is a year spent in a rathole somewhere in grotty London. Not really a great benchmark.

Such a big world to explore, so little time...

Agree - so big and too little time. I've been priviledged to travel quite extensively for both work and holidays - even turned down an expat posting to The Hague. For me, I'll max my overseas allowance as an insurance policy using bucks earned in SA, and hope I'll never need it. My one-liner is heart felt and experience based, but I agree, sometimes we can over simplify and romanticize to justify our choices (and sometimes because we have no alternatives). Phew!! Deep stuff.

You could'nt have said it better Willehond. A few lucky SA citizens that have been abroad come back with a very neg feelings(youngsters that work in London etc), but I think it's like you say, they lived in difficult conditions and it was survival for them, so coming back to SA is a nice comfort zone to be in and therefore the prefered place to be in. I will leave SA tonight if I can just find a fair job, but that is not so easy these days as the recession is still very"alive" abroad( Europe and USA) and btw I have been overseas more than once before so I know what it looks like there.

Deep indeed. We have discussed this "leaving SA" issue to death and it is always a very personal thing. One thing I am convinced about is that you must go for the positives, not leave because of the negatives (digest that deep thought!). People who thrive on the negative will find something to complain about wherever they are! Nothing worse than a moaning Saffa bitching and moaning about South Africa AND the country they moved to

Well said. Think we're on the same page. :)

As I've said sometime before on The Hub, it's easier to earn ZAR 7 than USD 1, and it buys you more lifestyle. Sure, that lifestyle comes with hectic risks unique to SA and are often violent. The grass is always greener on the other side - because there's more poop over there.

Will trade for a year: Townhouse, 3 bed, 2.5 bath, 2 car garage in Fox Lake, Illinois. Good neighborhood, good schools, even throw in a car. (Have accidentally left both house and car unlocked numerous times, once even left the keys in the ignition - don't ask), for place to stay in Western Cape, just hook me up with a job! Hehehe... :D

Even in USA:

Adam Craig and Todd Wells’ bikes stolen in Vegas - BikeRadar 30/09/2010

On Ireland:

Check the news headlines, Ireland could possibly be the first developed nation to be permanently disabled by the turn in economic power away from the West. More than 30% of houses vacant..., My project manager has 4 houses in Ireland, sold one very recently. According to him it was not a good experience.

I am certainly not looking forward to the power being slowly erroded in the West and moving East/South America. These guys are bound to do things differently and it will affect all of us. Luckily SA is well positioned as the perceived gateway to Africa.

Leaset in SA you get to see the guys who are taking your bike, they ask so nicely with gun, screw-driver or spade.

Firstly hello All from Ireland I miss you!!!! Now to my story.....

This is Ironic.

I leave SA for greener pastures of no Crime Bla bla bla.

So I come to Ireland, find some work and buy myself a Racing HT for comutting of course.

As we in SA ride quality afterall and nothing else.

So anyway, Saturday evening or should I say Sunday AM I come out of work and go to get my bike out of

the restricted area to Customers and low and behold my bike is missing a few item.

These Little Bastard ****s Stole my Saddle,Seatpost & Collar, My Magicshine Light, and of all things

my Flippen handle bar grips. All in excess of R3000. So I know its petty but darn how **** is that?

So Yes SA might have its problems but now I guess the rest of the world is no difference...

PS It seems my 10mm chain worked on keeping the bike there. HAHAHAHA

It is easy to say I could've told you that. My son was in the UK for 2 years. Did some work for a elderly gentleman who gave him a MTB. Near the end of his tour, he worked in London. Locked the bike to a pole outside his apartment just to find everything gone the next morning.

Well hubbers - happen to be in London with a client on business. There was a strike on the underground today. So only buses and no tubes. Talk about havoc 7! Guys we're head-butting and slapping each other to get on (pushed off) a bus. Saw it with my own two eyes. So, again, I'd far rather be earning ZAR 7 than USD 1. We do have a much better quality of life in SA, albeit far riskier. Europe is a mess. Forget bicyle theft in Ireland and worry about bailing out the banks.
