I hit an eland at 80kmh descending out of Suikerbos in the Vets tour last year. Heard other stories of the antelope encountering kind there too since. I won't be doing that race. Scars still healing....Telkom is fast up to hekpoort which is a bit tougher than Krugersdorp, but it's really the only real challenge.

Telkom is a lekker race which seems to be fairly easy for the first 85km or so and then you hit a little pimple called Hekpoort which has seen many people walking for about 4/5 km to the top

Will be there for sure

And Wolverine has giving you a complete summary of the race .

LOL

If I had to write the race reports the guys selling ad space would have their  work cut out for them.

Is there much more to say?

I will be at Telkom. It's quick for the first 85 then up Hekpoort short drop then up Poeier Kop then down 1km to the finish.

I have just hit 1 eland personally. Not something I'm prepared to chance repeating. I'm sure the r4v will be safe for 1000 others going through there. Somehow I can't conjure up the enthusiasm to enter that race.

While recovering with a broken pelvis I heard that another cyclist hit a smaller buck which kicked him in the face. He needed surgery. Johan Spies also had a close encounter there with a herd of Wildebees so I'm told.

Aaaaah Hekpoort ..................... I recall my first IronMan at Hartebeespoortdam (Schoemansville resort?), seeing an oldish chap on the cycle with a pair of slops in his shirt pockets and remember asking him why!

He said you'll see later, and I did see him walking up Hekpoort cycling shoes in hand!

The R4V climb is the harder one of the 2. I guess it is steeper, but perhaps slightly shorter. You hit it mid race, so it is not always descisive, but non climbers will get dropped.

Satelite has hekpoort at the end, as close to a mountain top finish as you can get in Gauteng. Route fairly easy to the base of the climb, though it can get windy.

For those that want a real challenge, enter for the Satelite road race on Saterday, the Mtb night race Saterday night and the Mountain bike race on Sunday.  The Mountain bike race will have a complete new route and it will be a challenge.  For those that entered the Mtb race on Sunday, you will have free entry to the night race on Saterday evening
