I greet everybody who is on a bike, because they are facing the same dangers, challenges and (potentially) joy as I am going through. And yes I mean everybody, kids, labourers on wheezing, squeaking things with taco-shaped wheels. Hell, even MTBers!

And I greet walkers and runners because, like me, they are also out exercising.

i've always been one of the people greeting everyone, but with our new cycle route there are so many people riding, it gets a bit much. I need some time to get air in my mouth.

Must say though that a group from City Cycles past us through Green Point on Sunday and they were all most polite and well mannered. One guy even let me through even though it meant losing his group. Also have had the Outrider group pass me a while back and I got lots of hello's even though they were concentrating on riding in a group.

I think us cyclists are a "community" and whereas walkers / drivers aren't. I think runners all great each other

What's the difference?

Big difference. Cyclists are part of a community. I guess it just defines the type of person you are. Either you do or you don't.

No, but I have had a gripe for years with cyclists not acknowledging one another, as a cyclist when I see other cyclists I at least feel like we are all part of the same family, so a little nod , wave, hi or even the middle finger would be welcome.

The problem is that every second cyclist sits on his egotistical high chair thinking that when you see him you should be impressed with him as he is the next "big thing"

Gosh, the running community are much friendlier, perhaps because they all have something in common, and that is the fact that they respect one another as runners.

Well said, Ive noticed it too. Even on the the hub, there is this "attitude"

One thing I've learned from years of investigating is when someone answers NO followed by a but, nothing they are going to say after that matters.

Don’t assume that when a fellow cyclist does not acknowledge your greeting that the person is egotistical or not friendly. Maybe they are just concentrating on what they are doing.....Maybe their thoughts are somewhere else.... Don’t get so sensitive we are all just human beings

For me it's much of a muchness.... Often I greet, but also there are times I don't if I'm in a bit of a headspace on a ride.

People shouldn't be so sensitive, if you greet or not, or don't get a return greeting. No big deal, jeez.

Cycling is one of those few sports that we can enjoy on our own or within a pack.

I remember way back when i was a laaitjie, all cyclist used to greet each ther - whether you were a "fun" rider, or if you were a more serious rider... these days most okes on there expensive p!$$y bikes think they are the bees knees and even strain their necks to see what bike you are riding - then they seem to decide to greet or not.

I also think it's that "superioristic" attitude that makes us hated by drivers and the like.

Well here in Cape Town that is the truth. Come on guys...it does'nt take much to lift a finger or even nod your head.

All these feeble excuses why not to greet other cyclists/runners/walkers, it really costs nothing to raise a hand in ackowledgement of another like minded individual, like you, also up at some ridiculous hour, whether he/she be cycling running or walking. Get over yourself and try it, you might like it. If not go cage fighting, it might suit your demeanour more.

I agree Dassie - sometimes we are in our own little world... but when someone looks at you when you greet, and then blatantly ignores your greeting (for whatever reason), that's when i think some of us get a bit peeved.

I do sometimes say a nasty thing at those okes - knowing well enough I am fast and strong enough to ride away from them if they decide to chase me down

In my years of reading **** on forums, I have noticed that when someone starts with a "don't" which is followed by "assumed" followed by a flurry of "not's", they normally back up all that negativity with an egotistical comment trying to justify their reasons for not being able to communicate positively.

What about during a race? when the community is all together? should we greet or not?

Why not? I think so, as long as it doesnt impede your race

I like the headspace argument, it's valid (you tjop)

What get's me is when they are looking at you, or brush past you that your elbows make brief contact or as they do on the Spruit ride towards you, push you off the trail and still don't have the decency to say hi, let alone apologise.

Judging by the response your bike is upwards of R30k, you wear team kit and don't greet ;) I may be wrong though...
