Hi All,

I am looking at getting a set of road tyres for my MTB, mainly to use for the 94.7 in November. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

I am in Johannesburg, so if you know where I should look, that would also help.

Thanks

My advice to you, loose the idea of road bike tyres for your mtb (before Style Man spots you!), and rather get a low profile fast rolling mtb tyre. Try Killer Bees (650 g) for around R180 a piece or Rubena Syferos (480 g) for R500 a piece. The latter is much more expensive, but the reduced rotational weight will be to your benefit. At least your bike will look the part, perform like a road bike, and can be used for trails! Have you ever seen a mtb with road tyres? Makes me think of the old school Western Flyers  .

Style is for fragile little egos.

Get a set of Conti catorskins, size 26" and 1.5" wide, pump them up to at least 6 bar.

They are pretty bulletproof and very low rollresistance. You then would'nt need to change anything else for now. You'll run out of gears on the mtb but the ride will be a lot easier.

If you are fit and strong and want to impress then stay on the mtb tyres.

Nevermind that we are watching you, Dave.

I got a pair of Conti Sport Contact 1.6's for the 94.7. Been training with them for about 2 weeks now to get used to them before the 21st. Made a HUGE difference and they roll very, very well and I'm surprised by the amount of grip I got. Don't forget to get different tubes for them as they much smaller than your normal tyre.

Oh, and I bought them from http://www.buycycle.co.za. Good, quick service.

I recon halfway in your race with you heartrate between 170-200 your not going to give a flip about style... Those wormdrive tires DO look wicked though.

hi try the MICHELIN RUN R or XC ROAD 26x1.4 at 6 bar . an amazing tyre . light in weight , fast rolling , quiet and comfortable

while on this topic of slicks for a mtn bike ...... do you get tubeless slicks?

You can make almost any tyre tubeless, the rims are more an issue but unless it is the nastiest cheapie it is doable.

Don't know if you get tubeless specific ( like UST) slicks

Continental Sport Contact is probably your best bet

Comes in a 26(circumference)x1.3(width) and 26x1.6

+1!! I used 1.3s for my only Argus to date and was suprised at how ewell they hold the road.

I just got a set of Kenda Kwest yesterday (also for the 94.7 :)

Does anyone have experience with these? Are they any good?

I haven't put them on yet, so I can still exchange if I have to.
