I'm riding Mavic Tubeless rims and have been using Sludge sealant in the tyres. I've been having problems with air leaking out around the valve and discovered that the valve hole has become corroded and is bigger than it should be. As a result the valve is not seating correctly.

Two questions -

I've heard that this corrosion can be caused by a reaction between the rims and the sealant. Is this correct and is it specific to all sealants or just sludge ?

Can I get my rim repaired or is there another solution ?

I had sealant in my tubby and it ended up in the dust bin with still lotsa thread on the tyre!

Tread dude tread not 'thread', that's string or this group of messages you are reading through - brought to you as a community service by BigS ;)

I had the same problem with a slow leak on my Mavic rims, filed/sanded it smooth as much as I could, but since they are 5 years old I have sorted out a new DIY wheelset with Stans Rims, that uses rim tape which might avoid that problem in the future.

Most tyre sealants contain ammonia, which will result in rim corrosion eventually. Mavics are known to be prone to ammonia corrosion, therefore Sludge Products is making an ammonia free sealant called All Terrain (orange box).

Thanks atraut

I suspected something like that, just needed confirmation.

Now I just need to see what I can do about my rim.

Same on mine. I drilled the hole and made a ghetto conversion.

You can try to tape the rim with stans tape, and then make a tiny hole for the valve. Or use a stans/joes rimstrip.
