Tygerberg Mountain Bike club involved ? Me thinks so !!

Im with you on that! my brother is one of the 10 tygerberg MTB chaps that took on the new trails, though the bastid would rather cut off his nuts before he tells me where it is. but the distances quoted here and on the newsletters are the same and so is the opening dates. So i think they just might be one and the same.

Tygerberg Mountain Bike club involved ? Me thinks so !!

There is no official Tygerberg MTB club involvement; however, Adrian (secretary of Tygerberg MTB club) and I (a member of Tygerberg) have built most of the Tygerberg trails and are also doing the route for the new Stellenbosch trails in our private capacity. We will also assist with advice re the initial start up of the trails.

These new trails will however operate as an independent trail system and Tygerberg MTB club will have nothing to do with the running of the trails, but will promote it as much as possible.

I understand that a Google map at this stage might be premature, but just an indication of which side of Stellenbosch (north, south, east west) will be nice to satisfy the curiosity. :)

Well, lets see...

Trails are, as far as I know, in the hills between the Bottelary Road and the Polkadraai Road. Not sure what that area is called.

If Hellwarp and Miss MTB are who I think they are - then the trails probably start on or near their farm which is on the road to Jordan Winery. There's not much parking there though, so they'll probably have the trail start on another farm. There are lots of different farms involved in this after all.

I'm guessing there'll also be an entrance from the north, to accommodate Tygerber members as they are helping out with this initiative.

This is all very very cool, but I sort of wish that Tygerberg would build some more trails for their members as well... (hint hint)

My understanding of a club is: "For members, by members".

So if there is something that you think your club should be doing, get involved and do it!

This is very cool. I just hope that people can follow the rules and pay the entry each time.

It's actually a really good test to see how mature the mtb community at large is.

The rules are going to be really simple, you pay an annual membership or buy a day pass. You stick to the marked trails and enjoy the ride. IMBA rules apply as usual.

Mind you with the amount of climbing there is, maybe "enjoying the ride" could be a challenge.

The landowners (Boere) trust that the MTB riders will abide by the rules, otherwise it won't be a win-win situation.

Nearly there

I trust that a number board (or something similar) to be displayed on the bike will be supplied with annual and day passes so that users can easily spot free loaders and politely inform them of the rules and where to pay.

We will have a bike board system, not only for self policing by member riders but also for easy identification by farm owners and managers.

For now the whereabouts are anyones guess until things are finalised. Because we dealing with 20 different landowners and various other factors we cant divulge too much info.

Believe me a lot of people are are really exited at the prospect and we hope it lives up to expectations.

Our goal is to open the route on April fools day ...

Actually we were thinking more along the lines of a dam crossing ..... route stops one side and continues on the other (with no way round). So you have to swim your bike across.

Sorry guys - no Google map at this stage. There are unfortunately riders who will start riding the route before the opening and we don't want the farmers to shut down the route before it has even opened.

@ Cassie - pm me to join us next weekend.

Thank you very much for allowing me to join you guys for the ride on Saturday.

Gee, it was hot!

You have done an excellent job; it is obvious that you have put in a lot of effort and time into this.

The new single track sections just need some rain on it to help compact the sand.

Can't wait for the route to be officially opened.

Beware guys, if you string all the route options together, you are in for some serious climbing!

I expected a tough 45km, but still under estimated it.

Lets blame it on the extreme heat...

Sooo almost 1st of April, will I be able to ride these routes on Saturday?

Had to speed through 5 pages of posts ;-)

Think a paid/serviced park is an great idea - as a business model I am not sure as you are challenged by the the amount of time people have to ride - mainly weekends. Can that sustain itself? Winter becomes more challenging.

I have ridden mountains like Whistler and Thredbo in Australia and can vouch for the success of the mountain bike park provided it offers something different and better than local trails. That last bit is the key. To simply build some more singletrack may not be enough. Freeride areas, Downhill runs - serviced shuttles for an extra R50 on weekends, a pump track and jump park are needed as well as 4x course. A night lit xc course and jump park would allow later riding bringing in more rev.

There is enough single track around especially in Stellies it seems. Think you need to offer more.
