Hi All

I've been using SPDs without any issues but the light weight of the Eggbeaters and 4 sided entry sounds very tempting.

Please share your experience with your fellow Hubbers.

In my opinion (and experience) SPDs are reliable, handles mud reasonably well, entry is no issue and I can use my shoes for spinning. Is there a strong case why I should change? Am I missing something just because I haven't tried the Egg Beaters?

I originally started using SPD´s (non-Shimano).

Upgraded to Eggbeaters when they were initially released in SA, have been using since - at least 10 pairs.

This might come as a suprise but if I have to start-over I would go SPD route - XTR to be specific.

Reasons:

Price - Eggbeaters are expensive, Ti-ones are over-the-top

Cleats - expensive and have to be replaced regularly

Maintenance - they need regular greasing (especially after 1 year of regular riding)Note: this issue might have been resolved with the new bearing design - I have only done a hand-full of rides using these so cannot comment yet.

Stability - less platform = less stability

Q-factor - the entry level models tend to have a comparative long spindle (only relevant if you are a serious racer type)

I bought a new high-end bike recently - it came with 2011 Ti Eggbeaters. Considered changing to XTR, but decided against since I have to change 3 bikes and I have numerous spare cleats for Eggbeaters.

Lastly, the benefits using Eggbeaters are: lightweight (even the entry level), ease of entrance, excellent mud-clearance and non-cyclist asking if you´re pedals are broken (after enquiring about the state of your Lefty)

I'm riding Time ATAC pedals now, like them a lot. I used

to ride SPDs. They clog up with mud very easily, so they're

useless for CX or if you have sloppy conditions. The Crank

Bros. pedals shed mud well, and some friends of mine like

them, but I've also heard they're not as durable.

Used to use SPD's for a number of years, bought myself a pair of EggBeaters about 1 year ago to 'test out' and never looked back. I really like the quick release of them, don't clog with mud, quick to engage and 'feel' lighter to pedal. Go through mud and they clip in effortlessly. Always used to 'bang' my foot on the SPD's to clear the mud. Never done this with EggBeaters. Once you start use them, it takes a while to get used to them especially if they are new. Once they have been used for a bit they are really easy to clip in. If I get onto a bike with SPD's - I really struggle to clip in, in comparison now. You have 4 angles to use, just roll your foot quickly to clip. Seems to take higher up than SPD's. I have learnt to love them. I'd go for EggBeaters - Really better than SPD's My 2C's

Looks like the new models will require less maintenance.

There is a rider weight limit for the titanium shaft models. (also very expensive)

What happens to egg beaters when you have a serious pedal strike?

How strong are they? Anybody with bad experiences?

To be fair - please also list real issues that you've experienced with SPDs.

Eggbeaters are still very strong. Have hit mine couple of times at high speed and nothing wrong with them.

Think Weight Weenie has hit his so hard that it did or almost knock him from the bike, and still no problem

Had a big pedal strike with entry level egg beaters and broke the cap off. Not cool but, having said that, all the new Crank bros stuff is user serviceable so it would not be an issue nowdays.
