It would be very easy to delete all results "achieved" by chips which started in groups other than their own.

That would also do away with guys sneaking into "better" start groups and make start marshal's lives a lot easier.

Want to start ahead of your seeding? Go right ahead, but don't expect to see any results!

Maybe they will get caught but its dangerous and the damage gets done in the mean time, I never really thought much about it until I got seriously hurt, then it made me think wait a minute something is not right here, and something needs to be done.

MDW i feel for you, sucks big time, but that is amateur racing for you. The first 10km one try and stay out of trouble (yet we can argue that 3rd in line should be pretty safe) you just never know how experienced the guys around you are.

I recall last year the PPA guys with good seedings also started in the licensed groups. A couple of guys that only do mtb'ing and entered for the Road race were seeded in VA and VB - these guys had questionable group riding skills.

During the 94.7 I passed a DD omie on the M1. I started in J so how did he make it into a pen before me?

He should have received a dq

I started in L and passed a realy fat guy on the M1 just before the offramp we took. He had a D number. How did he manage to get a D seeding. He was realy struggeling up that hill and I think he was one of the guys walking up heartbreak hill at 16h00 on TV (if he made it that far)

Another abnomalie is the seeding times one gets. Often a group of strong riders will fly past me and they start three or four groups back. I am not slouch in F group but these guys are way better than me? They must have done races to seed yet get bad placings?

Cape Epic riders reminding themselves how boring road riding really is :P (ducks the popcorn...... ;)

It happens with some entries that the organisers make a mistake and give entrants an incorrect race number. My gf got given an A number entry via substitution for Sunday but rather chose to ride in M group where she finished quite comfortably in the middle of the bunch. I entered to ride VD, but the corporate sponsor gave me a D group number. No problem for me though, I rode with the main D group bunch from start to finish, and came across a lot of riders of questionable ability, including more than a few riders with no race number at all. Probably some local riders taking advantage of the event without having entered.

EDIT : the argus

I re-conned the route, I wanted to stay in the front through town as I was worried about the narrow roads and steep hills being at the back, but as you say being 3rd wheel, only 2 possible guys could have gone down in front of me only 2 out of the entire bunch, and number turns around, I swear I thought I was dreaming I could not believe what was unfolding in front of me, what rider in second wheel turns around to look at the peleton, especially since we had just got onto the highway mmmmmmmm, very very questionable riding.

I don't ride roadraces much anymore, but got just a little bit frustrated by how the seeding works. A lot of guys wheelsuck all the way to simonstown, limit their losses up smits and then latch onto the next bunch once on the flat.pretty soon they're at chappies 5min down and they *** off for the last 30km. End result:they finish 20min down on the group leaders, and will no doubt keep their seeding despite being in the bottom 10% of their group.

Some would say its smart riding, its a reward/privilege for experience. Put in a group of their current ability they would be 45min slower and would have to work at the front too. That is precisely why

people try and cheat their way into groups above their ability,it will result in better times (earlier starts too).

I've heard people say the only thing keeping them riding each year is the fear of losing their good seeding, Because they could never get to that same seeding if they had to start from scratch again. That in itself should sound wrong to some people(and perfect sense to those who have been in the sport for a while and have lost a bit of speed!)

Is there a solution? Well currently a 3:30 argus from E group is considered better than a 3:40

from the oke who timetrialed from OF.obviously the second guy will get there with a bit of perseverance and a few reseedings, but the first guy will hold his level for years only gradually dropping down.

Adding a lot more volatility and comparing to group placing would seed the field better to current ability. as a scheming hacker you'd get dropped quicker and would have to wait a lot longer for a group of your ability.

I think this is a result of the fact that 94.7 and Argus seed only based on Racetec races and then only on the single best one of those. If their last Racetec race was the 94.7 last year, a lot could have changed since then.

I could use myself as a an example. My seeding from recent Championchip races is around 11, but due to a combination of injury and bad luck, my best Racetc seeding is around 18.

the argus isn't a race in the true sense of the word, it's a timed bicycle ride.

there are no tactics, it's just one big team time trial. i have suffered more, mentally & physically in a 50 km club race than in the argus. in the argus, i am more worried about getting to the finish without in one piece.

I reckon they'd actually go faster in a bunch closer to their ability since they won't get dropped and can then keep a higher average time troughout the race. Riding your guts out to hang on at the start of the race, only to get dropped from your bunch and then being too buggered to hang on to any other bunch that comes past is not a good strategy to get a good time.
