My first ride on my new bike after returning back from knee surgery.

I thought it was going to be an easy 25KM ride so that I can get back into things.

Long story short, during the ride I noticed that the crank arm was wobbling slightly.

I stopped, checked the crank, all seemed fine.During the last few kays it got progressively worse.

Took the bike to my LBS only to be told that the frame had been cracked at the point where the BB and crank are inserted.

Can this be reliably repaired?post-7640-0-51920800-1291139173.jpgpost-7640-0-00010100-1291139197.jpgpost-7640-0-95453800-1291140348.jpg

You interested in asking Specialized Head of Engineering that question? PM me if you want his email. They take these things very seriously in the USA. Unfortunately we don't have the Customer Protection Act inplace here yet and you are the 3rd owner. May be worth a shot as that is a very unusual failure.

Was the BB still tight in the threads or was there a possibility that the BB was unscrewing itself which put too much load onto the frame/insert causing the break.

I am trying to look for a reason don't know if its poss but if the BB unscrewed it would of put more leverage on to the frame/insert could this of been the wobble you felt at first

When you removed crank was BB still tight into the insert?

Either way I would certainly send Spez the pictures and maybe get the info from The_Break to contact them.

Hope you come right let us know what Spez say

Not so unusual.I've seen a lot of Specialized come apart at the BB like that.More on the road bikes but have seen probably 5 mtb frames that went the same way as yours.A lot more on the road bikes.Almost all of the white tarmac pros had that problem. They were all replaced under warrenty but got bad news for you, don't even waste your time been 3rd owner, you got no chance.

Just a note on those buying second hand.Try and get a proof of purchase with your bike/frame.Warrenty cards/registering the bike online as first owner etc means nothing. If you ever have a problem with your bike all dealers will ask you for the proof of purchase, without it you will get no-where.
