Hanging a carbon MTB frame on a Thule "Hang-on" type of bike rack, ist this adviseable?

My LBS serviceman in Rustenburg recons you should not suspend the Carbon bikes that way as the design of the carbon frame does not cater for horisontal torsion at 120km/h behind a car ,aparently there has been cases of the cyclest ariving at the destiantion with only a Carbon Pipe remaining on the "Hang Rack"......................... :( :o

I must admit it makes sense to me not to hang your bike like that...

Hey Mackie welcome to Plastic World. Hopefully you budgeted for it. I also had to fork out for a ride on type of rack after I bought my plastic road bike. Never thought of it initially, so blew the budget completely. Enjoy your new bike. I will be in your neck of the woods for 10 days after Xmas, so maybe we can go for a ride at Holla if you are in town.

Sorry to state the negative - if you are worried about breaking your bike by hanging it from the bike rack, perhaps you should be TERRIFIED of riding into the next pothole!

I don't reckon it's in the hanging, it's in the clamping... some know no limits... Reminds me of a framing shop that I saw in Manchester by the name of "Hang'em and bang 'em", but that's another story...

I Actually had this debate with my LBS, when I went plastic with the road bike.

I have the Thule Express, which is a hang on system.

The two mount points, (bars) are wound 30cm apart. So what this does, is it distributes the load evenly across the top tube, not focussing the energy in 1 point, like some of the cheaper carriers do.

Also the thule uses a rubber mount system elastically, so there is no chance of ctushing the tube when screwing it closed.

Of course a rear mount is always suseptible to morons rear ending your bike.

Thule express is cheap and fast.

This what the Corolla looked like after it rear ended my Isuzu with a Raleigh Microsoft Team Edition hanging on the back. There was more damage to the bike than the car... If you look closely you can see the wheel outline :( Go for the roof mount if you can afford it but watch out for the garage enrty!! ;)

Try one of the Thule Euroride racks, the 3 bike model is now 4K locally, good value as you are legal wrt lights and number plates.

Also the bikes stands upright so the clamp is only the to keep it falling over, so dont need to over tighten it and its not weight bearing.
