Ok. I need to get new tyres. what is better for wetter weather: NobbyNic vs MountainKing vs Crossmarks vs Larsen. Crossmarks and Larsens are cheaper. Performance wise.

Help.

Howzit, go check out 'Geax' tyres, they're awesome and you can use them on tubeless or non-tubeless wheels. further, you can 'interchange' one direction is for 'speed' and the other more for grip - sounds funny but if you look at the tread pattern on the tyre it makes sense.

I got a set for my MTB and they're very comfy and hard wearing. Just ask the guys at the shop to give you a tyre for the front and back wheels as there is a difference between the tread patterns on these. They go for about R650 each...bit steep but awesome.

Haven't tried the NobbyNic - but have had the other three on at some point... Can't give you a definitive reason why, but were it not for the price difference, would always go with MK over the CM and Larsens...

This being said, surely tyre choice remains quite a personal one? Whereas for the most part, hubbers would probably agree over the suitability of a particular type of tyre for a particular type of terrain [i.e. don't go for Black Panthers if mud is your friend] - I reason that mostly, people will differ as per their individual experiences?

I've only really ever used the Maxxis Advantage with a high rolling resistance and the Crossmarks with lower resistance but still with some decent edge grip. I'm doing the Sabie Experience and it is VERY wet and muddy, and the Advantages do still have decent life left in them as a good grip pair to take with incase.

Got a strong feeling the Crossmarks will end me on the slippery stuff, especially if the tyre behaves the same in the mud as it does on loose ground. i.e. very little centre linegrip but adequate grip while cornering. I nearly soiled myself going from the Advantage to the Crossmarks.

Looking for a good replacements for the Crossmarks I suppose. Oh and UST with normal rim compatiblity. I still run tubes.

Hmmmm....

For the front Kenda Karma and the rear Racing Ralph or Small Black 8's... all weather dependant though...

I have just put on a Maxxis High Roller front tyre and it is really really ***...

The Crossmarks are not made for wet and muddy conditions.

I ride crossmarks and love them in dry conditions but if there is mud, you will be slipping and sliding!

Changed from cross marks to rocket Ron (front) and geax mezcal (rear). Massive improvement in all conditions. My 2 cents worth.

Ja so I spoke to my local bike shop guy, and even though I do find the crossmarks pretty cool in the dry (after the initial pants pooing sessions) I do think they will not cope well in the wet and the mud, so I'm going to put the Advantage on 1) becuase I have them already, and 2) they have never let me down in the wet and 3) I'm NOT forking out R500/lust CM when I'm already selling my kidneys to afford a rental car for a week when in Sabie. DAMN!

I must have the right tyres on my bikes . Rain , dry , cold or hot they perform the way I expect them to . What tyres have I got ? hell I don't know it is a mixture of Race Kings , Kenda's and Larsens .

I only pay R350 for a LUST Crossmark. Damn R500, thats a rip - off.

Monorail or Mountainking upfront, larsen/crossmark at back. Currently have monorail front and crossmark back, very fast! Monorail is much faster than mountainking and grips almost just as well. CWC has new Tubeless tyres under 500g each, trying them next

Whatever tyre you get, dont get anything bigger than a 2.1 esp for the back. If it gets muddy you are going to suck up so much mud and end up pushing your bike.

Hectic, i've never really tought of it like that. I suppose that is why most tyres ar 2.1". Balance between grip/resistance and it kind of makes sense that the greater the surface area the more mud it'll gather. Obviously tread also plays a masive part.

Ridden Nobby Nic (2.25) on front for 3 years and have not had a reason to look for anything else. They are not great when the mud is really sticky (Sabie when it stops raining) but then you are going to have difficulty with most tires in those conditions. Did not have any problems with them at Sabie X last year but then it was wet enough that the mud did not stick. I find they have good grip, fairly low rolling resistance and I have not had many flats with them. Guess you can get 5000 to 7000 km out of them on the front. For a rear you probably do not need to go as aggressive. I have ridden Race King, Smart Sam, Rocket Ron and SB8 there. I have found the Rocket Ron doesn't have the grip I want under braking and the SB8 are too soft in rough conditions.
