I'm in the middle of the same process. Used paint stripper to clean the old paint from the frame.

Taking more or less the same approach on the painting...

I primed the frame with Rustoleum white primer (2 coats).

I have bought Rustoleum Metallic Dark Bronze spraypaint in a can and the 2x Cover Gloss Clear. I am going to give the frame a couple of coats of the colour and a couple of coats of the clear and see how it comes out.

I got some new stickers from Tyerone the Vynil Guy.

Just waiting for the holiday to arrive so I can finish the project! smile.png

I have been wondering about the durability of the clear coats... thinking the panelbeater optioin for the clear coats might not be a bad idea...

I used sodium bicarbonate powder (baking soda) which doesn't remove ANY metal material. It's very mild and even takes ages to cut through paint. The clean aluminium was a dull grey colour after blasting, indicating that the blasting didn't penetrate the surface of the metal.

The only downside is that you use a LOT of powder. One advantage of using sodium bicarb is that it is not harmful if inhaled, the body simply metabolises it, unlike sand or glass which can cause silicosis in the lungs.

Where in JHB did you get the bicarb blasting done?

I did it myself with a blasting gun I bought at Builders warehouse and used the stuff sold to raise the alkalinity of swimming pools; which is pure sodium bicarb anyways, also from Builder's @ R14/kg. I blasted the frame joints and bosses etc and hand-sanded the straight parts of the tubes.

My back yard looked like it had gotten a fine dusting of snow when I was done. The rain over the past few days completely dissolved all of that powder and my lawn is green again.

hey that crank looks like it is a SS setup .. you going SS with this puppy?

Yup, bought a Blackspire ring and some short gold chainring bolts and a Gusset cog and spacer kit and a Gusset Bachelor tensioner. Avid FR-5 levers as well. SRAM 1/8" chain.

The ends of the spider are silver, so I have to paint them flat black as well.

i hate the colour...but its a good paint job!! 10 points

I think I like it, but not 100% sure.... it looked nice on the paint can cap in the store. At least it's fairly neutral.

My components are all black and I have some goold accents like chainring bolts and I wanna get some gold bar end caps.

My next conversion is my old Peugeot roadbike - that's gonna be a white frame.

Would you consider hiring out the gun?

Looks sweet!

At least you have the tools now to change colour at random!

Do you feel like putting up some pics of your "equipment"?

Would be interesting to see what all was required to do this?

OK, so painted and clear coated the frame this weekend.

What do you guys think?

Hey DiverNick, nice sprayjob, well done on the clear coat. My brother used to spray bike frames for beer money when he was younger, I know what a mission it can be to get the clear coat right, no orange peel or runs!

Just an observation, as you're going SS on this frame, you should have cut off the cable bosses. I did it on my Giant frame, I also went the disk route, so cut off the bosses for the V-brakes too. Frame looks super clean now! Tyronne could do some gold vinyl for you too, could be cool.
