Is there anything on that link that you can refute?

Not refuting that link in particular, and as mentioned in an earlier post I made this morning, the prime reason I have never liked the word Xmas is that I feel it to be disrespectful. In fact, I find that link rather interesting and informative. However, I will continue to stand up for my beliefs, and not abbreviate the word Christmas.

The question posed by Dangle was related to Wiki in general, or so I interpreted it, and it is to that which I responded.

BTW, you can't refute anything unless you, yourself have a reference point to start from, which means that when it comes to Wiki, humans are rather gullible.

PS. I just love it when people can't admit that they possible offended others and then fight tooth and nail to save face.

I'll agree about the gullible part, and it applies to sources of reference much more widely accepted as Wikipedia.

I don't see any fight here. I just disagreed that using the word Xmas is disrepectful.

And I disagree that when I eat food that is not Halaal is disrespectful, but when I'm in the company of those whom it may offend, I relegate myself to their beliefs.

Relegate? Is that the right word for it? Sorry if I'm reading your post wrong, but it sounds like the beliefs of the company to which you refer are of a lower rank than your own. That's disprespectful.

No, it simply means I assign myself to a particular "category" or "class", this could be above my class or category or standing in life.

Or if you wish, I assign myself to a certain category based on appraisal or classification, we are not talking sports teams here.

Why should relegation only go to the lower order ?

Is it perhaps because this is where the term is used more commonly ?

As I said, you have to love it when they fight tooth and nail to not have to admit that they might have offended someone.

What's that U2 song.............Pride in the name of love.

Your topic heading offends me, enough said.

Generally, yes, it does mean to demote. In America usage is often misused instead of delegate. I can accept that the word in the heading offends you, but I still don't see the word as disrespectful.

You also have to love the people, who, unable to present a decent counterargument instead try to typify the person with whom they're are having a debate.

Ja, I am still waiting.

I do apologise for the fact that I don't succumb to your charm.

Here's another link worth reading. Well-balanced piece.

Xmas/Christmas

Generally speaking I avoid the term today even though, due to my training, it does not bother me. Tactically speaking I also avoid it due to the fact that we need to unambiguously announce Jesus and “X” just doesn’t do that anymore. However, we should also avoid being too easily offended in a matter such as this where usage has recently shifted. We may take offense where none is intended. Thin-skinned Christians are not helpful to turning the tide of anti-Christian fervor today.

So, in the end, perhaps a middle ground regarding the term “Xmas.” Avoid its use for the reasons stated but do not easily take offense regarding it either. There are bigger battles.

No need to apologise. You seem from your replies here to be a tad over-sensitive, so I wouldn't waste my charm…

Not to mention that the Christmas tree is itself a Pagan symbol. ;)

The whole day is pagan :) Do a bit of research in this... Yeshua was not born on 25 December as everyone thinks. No one knows on what day the birth of Christ took place.

However, we should also avoid being too easily offended in a matter such as this where usage has recently shifted. We may take offense where none is intended. So, in the end, perhaps a middle ground regarding the term “Xmas.” Avoid its use for the reasons stated but do not easily take offense regarding it either. There are bigger battles.

Also:

"However, many today do take exception to its use and it CAN in fact be an attempt to “X” Christ out of Christmas by some. In virulently secular times where it is considered acceptable to exhibit outright hostility to Christmas and Jesus, it would seem Xmas is problematic. Other things being equal, we want to be as explicit as possible that it is Jesus Christ to whom we refer. We should also be sensitive to the fact that many are bothered by the term Xmas even if we are not."

So, as mentioned earlier, it comes down to personal preference and opinion.

As much as I and certain other hub members might take exception to it, I understand that you might not have intended for the thread to be one of an offensive nature. That being said, I feel that it takes a big person to acknowledge that he/she may have offended others, whether deliberate or not, and apologise for that, whether sincere or not. The gesture, not the feeling behind it, goes a long way.

Anyway, that's my say on this topic. As said earlier, I wish you ALL a blessed Christmas!
