In my opinion, given the tone and context I don't see a problem with the word used.... but that's my opinion.

It's certainly not about being selective, but more rational and realistic. To use this instance as an example: Sure a word like "poephol" can be used quite offensively, but also in casual conversation between friends and while it may offend some, the intention of its use is not nasty. But... should this be allowed?

It's certainly a grey area and I'd like to hear from all the Hubbers on this:

Where should we draw the line with respect to language?

- Do we moderate to the extent of a Disney movie?

- Is it okay for the occasional PG 13 "questionable" word to be used friendly banter?

So it is ok to call somebody an asshole?

Read cervelo's post here again. He explained that it was supposed to self-deprecating.

Not knowing the full context myself, but judging from the quote, I tend to agree with you Matt. It was meant not as degrading, but rather jokingly, in my opinion.

Context is everything.

It depends how it is used. If you direct the wording to somebody in person, he might find it offensive, especially k@k, since some people's background is conservative. Others might have different cultures or backgrounds. It comes down to respect. Rather refrain from using it altogether, especially if you are unsure how somebody might react to it.

What do you have to lose from using good language on a public forum?

nope not ok

there is a difference between saying

Dont act like a complete poephol!

Or

You are a dumb poephol!

First one I would think is more acceptable, second not because that is a personal attack

It seems that respect and common sense are sometimes in short supply here on The Hub.

So moderation on how swear words are to be judged will be left to the tastes of the moderators. If that is the style of future moderation I see problems. Ek ken die verskil tussen *** en poeding..... hierdie is definitief NIE poeding nie!!!!!!

Do you cross a red traffic light or not?????

Hubbers everywhere trying to justify themselves??????

Umm...

But k*k = sh*t....

Not trying to be difficult. I've used both, and others (a lot), but why is the one cool to use and the other not?

Just asking.

I try not to use swear words at people directly( But Joh those powerbalance people test my resolve).

If I use the word K@k it will be "don't use those gels they are K#K".

Doesn't take much to be nice.

back on the forum i was a mod on, the mod's assessment was final. If u kicked up too much of a fuss, u got sinbinned for a few days. However when there were negatives associated with a mod's action, it was dealt with been the mods and admin, and I'll say for a fact, consensus was almost never there.

One might think, if u wear your most pessimisstic of caps, that little rule above would lead to a gestapo state: funnily enough, it worked pretty damn well. Peeps toed the line, and mods allowed some **** to slide.

So while we might debate context for crap etc, Admin is correct in allowing the mods full rights to stop crap in it's track, no matter how subjective. Discussions in the Admin's office will sort riff from raff wrt mod decisions. It's all a process and no one get's it 100% right 100% of the time. I guess the first rule of being a mod is: u just became an asshole, expect many reminders ;)
