Oooohhh. And how did you do this? Any chance of some pics?

Yes. will post some when I get home.

Used shorter crank bolts which I got for free from a nice guy at the LBS.

If you cannot get shorter chainring bolts (www.singlespeed.co.za sells them, but if you can't wait...), the spacers from older roadie cranks work well too (the spacer between the outer and inner chainring).

What SS chainring have you got, or are you just stripping off the outer and inner rings?

Hey Nick - for now I'll just remove the inner and outer blades - and run with the LX. I can understand the benefits of going SS specific on the ring - and since I'm a big boy :P - will no doubt be doing this sooner rather than later... Should also allow me to run a thicker (BMX?) chain, no?

Many thanks Whistler - will really appreciate that!

Good to know - will mention it to the LBS should I need to!

Chain? Yes. Especially if you're big and strong...get the 1/8 inch chain like on bmx and track bikes.

I got the Blackspire Monoveloce ring and SRAM PC-1 chain - Happiness!

!!!Warning!!!

My cranks started creaking so I greased everything, including my chainring bolts. Rather loctite them, my bolts all came loose on ride yesterday - I could have died!

Hi Rod

Here's a pic of the crank. Hope the detail is sufficient.

Hope it helps!!!

I'm running it with a single speed chain.

Whistler - that's it! :)

This will make the most sense - and be the simplest! It never occurred to me that I could simply replace the big blade, and lose the rest...

It works, as Drongo points out you need shorter SS chainring bolts. Does decrease integrity of crank by removing one chainring.

If you get a SS specific blade you could mount it either side of the chainset, in the middle ring position or big ring position, this will allow you to adjust chainline on the front.

As for the step, you could have a pair of spacers machined to take up the step - you could design them so you can use standard chainring bolts....could actually look pretty spiffy! Or have a bash guard made to measure with a custom design or graphic?

Thanks Mojo - the spacer idea is appealing, but will go that route when I have more time...

I presume that fitting a ring inside or outside will be determined by what type or size of SS-specific blade I purchase? Think I'll have a look on CRC, and then pop up a few options that I'm looking at, before placing the order...

Grant from www.singlespeed.co.za has the short crank bolts as well as Mono Veloce SS specific chainrings in various sizes

Thanks Steve, will drop them a line!

Ja quite easy. I saw this on a friend's bike and then tried it myself.

It's a standard 32T Truvativ blade, after I found out that the SLX blades don't fit on the old LX cranks. oops.

Enjoy the build and post pics afterwards!

Thanks Whistler - just had a bit of email banter with Jerrard over at Singlespeed.co.za...

He has advised that I look at replacing the middle ring, since replacing the outside/big ring will move my chain alignment slightly off - which can put undue stress on the hub (as in my rear wheel, not this Hub :P)...

Considering that I am a big boy - and my wheels are, shall we say, old-skool - I'd rather not take any chances... They will be getting back to me on the Blackspire Mono Veloce Singlespeed 7075 blade (they waiting for more stock), and then I can proceed...

Building this bloody SS has just about been a 9 month labour of love in itself... :D

Been fun!

Hey RodTi

That looks neat for sure. You will still need shorter bolts, but they are available.

The only issue here, is that if you are running a rear hub with fixed sprocket position, you will have to check that shifting the chainring outboard on the crank does not adversely affect you chain line. It all depends on the frame.
