A brave statement indeed that "blacks don't play rugby" - although ingnorant is probably closer to the truth.  There are more black rugby players than white.  In the Eastern Cape, rugby and boxing are more popular sports than football.  In many areas of the country, clubs with predominantly (often entirely) non-white players are beginning to dominate the leagues.

Having said all that, Super 14 and international teams should be selected on merit.  There is ample evidence that the quota's in schooling and age group sport has been very successful in developing players of colour that will soon be in the national and super 14 teams on merit.  It is necessary that, particularly at school level, quota's are continued and even increased.  At school level, there would have been no change without quota's as the teams are generally selected by "interested" parents and lack any transparency.

This is indeed true, what I have often wondered, though, is much the same thing that Nellie has mentioned:  It is true that out of a certain number of sportsmen/women there are only a very few that are good enough to make it to the very top (I suppose this is genetics etc).  Now I would really like to know:  in terms of the ethnic population group (black white whatever) what percentage does the registered rugby players represent?  In other words, if there are 48 000 white players, they may only represent 0.1% of the total population, but 1% of the white population, while 100 000 registered black players may represent just over 0.2% of the total population, but only 0.22% of the non-white population.  So if you want to play the ethnic numbers game and be representative of the INTEREST in the sport, there should be 5 white players for every 1 non-white player?  Just stirring a little.....Wink

Not an unfair stir.  You could take it a step further and say Springbok rugby is a business.  Revenue is generated by the ticket buying public and advertising.  The vast majority of the revenue generators from those two sources are white males.  However, if you go down that route, there would never be change, and if there had not been change there would have been no Springbok team at the World Cup as we would still be the greatest rugby nation not playing international rugby.

Just an aside, the Bafana squad for the Zambia game in September was 9% white.  Not quite representative, but certainly closer than rugby.

Guys we are starting the week-end on the wrong foot here, please let us remove the emotion of the moment and reflect on the facts. I am a person of colour not looking for sympathy or the like. First I have befriended cyclists across the cycling spectrum and I can honestly say there is only a few persons I do not see eye to eye with the rest be it their manner of talking stating their feelings etc I respect that for what it is even if we do not agree.

The other day I objected to something SIAS mentioned BUT today he hit the nail on its head with his statement here a classic example is cycling to mention one ( No money in the sport so there is no Gov interference at all) even most of us are not happy with issues within CSA office.Buti Khompela Sports spokeperson who threatened this very Springbok team is rather QUIET now that the boys are on the brink of been Champions once again, I bet when the President and Sports minister welcomes them home he will be there as well.( Makes you think).

Nellie you live in an area where rugby development and transformation is growing in leaps and bounds but sadly it is not able to sustain this good work because money steals these youngsters away from your area. T/D needs to start on the ground level and work its way through the system, our national team must be our pride and joy and only the best should be there no tokenism allowed.

BTW are you guys following the situation in cricket from club level onwards then one will see what manipulation is all about, no wonder Stauss and Pieterson are in the England camp. Politics in sport is a very decietful tool when used to ones advantage and suitability. TO all doing the Amashova we will ride with sore heads on Sunday after cheering our boys along an Sat night please excuse us for wobbling along the route. As the saying goes EISH.

Hmm - it's truly worrying...

A part of me tells me that this is just all political hubbub.

We have elections coming up around the corner and these sneaky politicians know exactly how to seduce those who care to listen.

So - in short - the bubble will burst soon - and things will be back to normal..

I hope I'm right Thumbs%20Up

Mallo.

It makes me sick beyond my ears to see my countrymen spend so much time and money on sport......

Jerseys.

Caps.

Flags

Beer.

Blou ballas

R400 a ticket for a rugby match....

Wasting money.

That money can be used for something useful!!  Giving one hungry child a piece of dry bread.

Whatever.

Just think what could have been done with the money our Health minister wasted on her op and news adds trying to justify hereself or the money we will waste on the Picoli saga.

I've always wondered - is enforced quotas not a far worse alternative than equal development opportunities? Saying that, I realise that not everybody will have the same development opportunities, but real talent does not need a personal coach... does not need a country club support structure.

We all know that mail by Bill Gates about how life is unfair. Cest la Vie for professional sport? How did Brian Habana get to rise to the top? JP Pietersen? I cannot see how enforced quotas will lift the standard of the game... or I am being flippant for thinking that's actually what we want to achieve. Last time I checked competition was about being the best... pushing the best team in the field. Competition and equality for the sake of compliance are strange bedfellows.

Personally, I think enforced quotas will breed mediocrity and ultimately embarrasment.
