yep, about 3 planks broken if I remember correctly from the ride today. fortunately, nothing that will cause a wheel to get stuck. So in the interim, just keep rolling folks.

Someone once said they store some spare planks underneath that north shore structure. I didnt have a hammer + nails handy, so didnt stop to check.

Long time no action on this thread. I rode Tokai again yesterday after a few months absence. Man it is getting trashed in some areas, particularly Vasbyt. The single track is getting wider and wider from people riding around roots, trees and other "obstacles" such as puddles, in some places you can ride three abreast. Oh how I miss the the narrow twisty single track from years gone by. Perhaps SANParks needs to start limiting the number of riders that they let in to save the trails.

Limiting won't help, riders need skills to ride the trail, not go round the fun bits.. or ride shortcuts because a few rocks are in the way??!! How can one ever hope to get better if choosing the easy way is the norm?

We'll be narrowing the trail soon. Two blocks of ringed wattle have been marked for felling and it is all going into the trail as lining...

Brilliant, I will try help out with the maintenance when you post the details. I agree there is some pretty poor riding, both in terms of "chicken runs" and bike control, why can people stop riding down singletrack with the rear wheel locked up?

Because people need to be educated, that it's not cool to ride with wheel locked up, and not to drag their brakes. It's all a matter of skills development.

Last weeks very hard rain really hammered Tokai, but it was good to see that most of the water diverts that the build boys installed during summer are working and preventing erosion and washing away of the trails. I haven't seen the place quite so muddy for a while. I do think the places where puddles form should be drained or people will ride around the mud and widen the trail. Chickens taking shortcuts or making easier diverts have been part of Tokai forever and as fast as these get closed with logs and branches, the next wave of riders open it again. Only education will solve this problem and that of dragging rear brakes into the corners, but I think it's going to take forever.
