Spoke to the Argus cycle tour office today regarding taking over another riders entry:

This is what they told me and I have a huge problem with this (if the lady explained it correctly to me).

The person that is giving up the entry may not ask me more than what he originally paid (R275 in this case).

I must pay him to take over the entry if he demands money (which everybody that can not ride will surely try to do to recover their costs).

I must then pay another R275 to the organizers for my entry!!! This is on top of the R275 paid to the person who's entry I am taking over.

Something is not right here, they are making double profit on the entry!

Am I missing something?

See post from FAQ section on the site:

What if I enter but cannot take part?

If you cannot take part, then you may find another cyclist to take your place and the organisers will arrange a substitution.

Substitutions must be arranged through the Cycle Tour office between 1 February and 25 February 2011. The original entrant will NOT be refunded his/her entry fee and his/her number will be withdrawn.

If you are making your place in the Cycle Tour available for substitution, you may ask the substitute rider to refund your entry fee but you may not ask for more than you originally paid. Contraventions will result in the disqualification of both parties.

Merchandise orders and chip purchases are not transferable. You will need to ask someone to collect your merchandise at Registration on your behalf.

The procedure is explained on our Substitutions page.

i also called them yesterday and spoke to ashley du plessis..and yes this is how it done PLUS the person selling the entry must give you a letter of consent just saying that you are now taking over the entry...ashley said nothing about the seller can only ask so much as he/she paid..and once you have the letter of conscent containing the sellers name, surname,id and ref no for entry you must WAIT until 1 feb before you can submit it and continue the procedure...ashley also said that there will be a sub form available on the site but ONLY on 1 feb..she made it very clear that now consent forms or any other paperwork must be sent through BEFORE 1 feb... so ja daa is dit nou...kom nou van sit en slaap!!!  i bought mine for R280 yesterday...my only problem is that the seller can sell it to many people and just gave all the same consent form!!!! ek sal ma net sorg dat ek my paperwork instuur eerste :D

Still think a R50-R100 admin fee will be acceptable. Feel that charging twice for the same entry is taking it a bit far. There can be many reasons for people not starting the race and this system makes it difficult for those to recover their costs and also makes the entry VERY expensive for the new rider.

And I think that R30 for a bottle of chain lube is a acceptable. After all, the fully synthetic oil that I ran in my race car cost around R350 for 5 litres.

Then again, I'm not in the chain lube business, so what do I know? :D

I can not see the relevance of the price of chain lube to this thread, but then again, what do i know? I am not in the race car or race oranising business

No other race that i know of has double entry fee for subs.

I agee with you 100%. For R525 total I can enter many fun rides. I have done Argus already and quite frankly living in Cape Town I am somewhat spoilt for choice. Tough missed the cutoff but refuse to be screwed for this.

If they did not contribute so much to charity I would have made a stink but seeing as we are late and allot of this money goes to charity its not worth complaining.

In both cases it's called charging what the market will bear.

ok, you must be new at this game. many races dont even offer substitutions....that's a double entry right there from their side(more if you have late entry fees). yup, even the good guys like dirtopia.

argus is a charity event (yup, even the ppa third is charity) - they really should advertise this more. so when they charge twice its to increase their donations pool. if you really feel that they are ripping you off by this, then i suggest you dont ever buy a sticker from a nice granny at the shopping centre to put some money in her tin can.

now for non charity (ie. profit) races, charging excessive subs fees to racers is basically just telling your entrants that they are idiots and we don't mind fleecing you. there is a very popular 7 day mtb race round here about two weeks after the argus that charges R2500 to change your rider details 2 weeks before the event. i'm sure they even allow for it in their profit projections..

if it really irks you so much, then rather find an argus racer who won't charge you for his entry. they only stipulate a price ceiling to prevent people from scalping/reselling their desired entries (U2 tickets are going for about 3x face value on gumtree)

Just did a sub for an entry to the attakwas. No charge, just an email to the organisors...

Even that other 7 day race charge a % of the entry for a sub and not double. The benificiary is irrelavant. It does not mean that because you give the entry fee to charity that you can charge double.

It will be hard to convince me that this is the right way to deal with substitutions.

Those pesky race organisers, forcing you to do a substitute entry.

Oh, wait. They don't force anybody to do a substitution. Never mind.
